Great images!  This person's comment struck me as completely absurd.  Taken away?  What the hell are you talking about?!  You can still do just about any old school process you want today.  If you have access to the internet you have access to the information and materials most likely.  Modern technology has made it even easier to use OLD technology.  I mean, look at guys like John Coffer!  You can still shoot glass plates, tintypes, Daugerrotypes...whatever if you really want.  If you want old school you can totally do it, this dude needs to find Google.  Sheesh!

I have seen the pictures of Russia from the early 1900's. I find it incredible how a photographer at that time could create such beauty. Now that we are in the digital era of photography those images can not be created. For example the use of the darkroom has been taken away from the photographer, instead replaced by a disk, which to be shown, needs the computer. We can no longer enjoy ourselves in the darkroom in a totally private surrounding. Instead we now have to rely on a CD. I feel by having the CD we are giving up our privacy as photographers. In the good old days we would develope our film with total control. Today we have to rely on a memory card and a computer to do this work. As a photographer myself I can I honestly say that digital images are not as good or better than film. I would like to have anybody prove me wrong. In closing I am saying, "the pictures taken in Russia on film are of days gone by.

Hey!

You are right about that. Traditional wet darkroom is still alive. True that the darkroom section at my local B&H store here in NYC is getting smaller but I can still get stuff I need for B&W film and paper. Currently I'm only developing B&W film but not printing.

Anyway, for those of you who still like to do it old school here is a good place to find stuff if you can't find it at your local photo store....

Back to the thread... Good find Wind. These early color photos are very interesting. The process of this type is very ingenious. I've read about this a while back. Think of it like the early 3 colors RGB video projector. Amazing that this RGB have been used since the early days of photography. Of course this only can be seen in color projected on screen but not on print. People must have been amazed seeing those color photos projected on screen. :D

Take care,

Absolutely amazing; and in a way almost haunting.

The pictures are so colorful and life-like, being that they 100 years old paints a vivid picture of how fast life goes.

Each of these pictures captured a moment in someone's life that no longer exists; sad the human condition is.

Thanks for the link - I just heard about Gorskiy on my vacation last week, a friend of mine told me about his color slide shows - a fascinating innovation at the time.
