Bring on the lyrics. If you dare…
« on: 27 Aug 2010, 12:31 am »
Music is my Xanadu - it truly is the milk of paradise (you are forevermore an inspiration Samuel). Darken the room, perhaps burn some incense - close your eyes as you are slowly enveloped by your most cherished music. The suffocating roar of voices diminishes and are temporarily vanquished. A delicate peace ensues - you have once again, come home.

We all look at music differently...

I have enjoyed reading the recent thread about LZ and the eventual discussions of which band was better. I am curious if many of us may have overlooked the “simple message” in the music from our favourite bands or more importantly, the musical genre. The message that I am referring to are the lyrics. Outstanding lyrics should be able to stand alone without music - poetry perhaps? When you do add the music, that is when the magic starts.

So, here is an opportunity, if you dare, to share some of your favourite lyrics that are most profound to you - philosophically speaking of course. A most interesting concept, a thread with no right or wrong responses.

Be well…

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here.

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from hell?
Blue skies from pain?
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cold breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
What have we found?
The same old fears
Wish you were here

Good thread Laundrew.

Bad Religion - Into the Night

in the city, the day is too hot
and you're hoping for relief, cuz your head is filled with pain,
but you get no relief, cuz the night is the same . . .
in the night, in the night you see through jaded eyes.
in the night, in the night you feel barely alive.
you live your life in darkness, you've got pennies on your eyes.
but you say that it's all right, cuz you've never lived a lie,
as you crawl back to your womblike existence in the night.
in the night, in the night you see through jaded eyes.
in the night, in the night you feel barely alive.
you can't see no light, but you hear those heavy footsteps,
and the little man inside twists your tormented mind.
your mind is filled with shadows, your palms are wet with sweat.
limbs are bound and tangled in a fatal net.
there are two things you can do.
one is turn and fight.
the other's run headlong into the night.
in the night, in the night you see through jaded eyes.
in the night, in the night you feel barely alive.
you can't see no light, but you hear those heavy footsteps,
and the breathing at your side, is it yours, or is it good bye!

Wait For Sleep - Dream Theater [Images and Words]

Standing by the window
Eyes upon the moon
Hoping that the memory
will leave his spirit soon

She shuts the doors and lights and lays her body on the bed
Where images and words are running deep
She has too much pride to pull the sheets above her head
So quietly she lays and waits for sleep

She stares at the ceiling and tries not to think
And pictures the chains she's been trying to link again
But the feeling is gone

And water can't cover her memory
And ashes can't answer her pain
God give me the power to take breath from a breeze
And call life from a cold metal frame

In with the ashes
Or up with the smoke from the fire
With wings up in heaven
Or here, lying in bed
Palm of her hand to my head
Now and forever curled in my heart
And the heart of the world

Bob Dylan-"The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest":

Well, Frankie Lee and Judas Priest,
They were the best of friends.
So when Frankie Lee needed money one day,
Judas quickly pulled out a roll of tens
And placed them on a footstool
Just above the plotted plain,
Sayin', "Take your pick, Frankie Boy,
My loss will be your gain."

Well, Frankie Lee, he sat right down
And put his fingers to his chin,
But with the cold eyes of Judas on him,
His head began to spin.
"Would ya please not stare at me like that," he said,
"It's just my foolish pride,
But sometimes a man must be alone
And this is no place to hide."

Well, Judas, he just winked and said,
"All right, I'll leave you here,
But you'd better hurry up and choose
Which of those bills you want,
Before they all disappear."
"I'm gonna start my pickin' right now,
Just tell me where you'll be."

Judas pointed down the road
And said, "Eternity!"
"Eternity?" said Frankie Lee,
With a voice as cold as ice.
"That's right," said Judas Priest, "Eternity,
Though you might call it 'Paradise.'"

"I don't call it anything,"
Said Frankie Lee with a smile.
"All right," said Judas Priest,
"I'll see you after a while."

Well, Frankie Lee, he sat back down,
Feelin' low and mean,
When just then a passing stranger
Burst upon the scene,
Saying, "Are you Frankie Lee, the gambler,
Whose father is deceased?
Well, if you are,
There's a fellow callin' you down the road
And they say his name is Priest."

"Oh, yes, he is my friend,"
Said Frankie Lee in fright,
"I do recall him very well,
In fact, he just left my sight."
"Yes, that's the one," said the stranger,
As quiet as a mouse,
"Well, my message is, he's down the road,
Stranded in a house."

Well, Frankie Lee, he panicked,
He dropped ev'rything and ran
Until he came up to the spot
Where Judas Priest did stand.
"What kind of house is this," he said,
"Where I have come to roam?"
"It's not a house," said Judas Priest,
"It's not a house . . . it's a home."

Well, Frankie Lee, he trembled,
He soon lost all control
Over ev'rything which he had made
While the mission bells did toll.
He just stood there staring
At that big house as bright as any sun,
With four and twenty windows
And a woman's face in ev'ry one.

Well, up the stairs ran Frankie Lee
With a soulful, bounding leap,
And, foaming at the mouth,
He began to make his midnight creep.
For sixteen nights and days he raved,
But on the seventeenth he burst
Into the arms of Judas Priest,
Which is where he died of thirst.

No one tried to say a thing
When they took him out in jest,
Except, of course, the little neighbor boy
Who carried him to rest.
And he just walked along, alone,
With his guilt so well concealed,
And muttered underneath his breath,
"Nothing is revealed."

Well, the moral of the story,
The moral of this song,
Is simply that one should never be
Where one does not belong.
So when you see your neighbor carryin' somethin',
Help him with his load,
And don't go mistaking Paradise
For that home across the road.

Evelyn, A Modified Dog -- Frank Zappa

Evelyn, a modified dog
Viewed the quivering fringe of a special doily
Draped across the piano, with some surprise

In the darkened room
Where the chairs dismayed
And the horrible curtains
Muffled the rain
She could hardly believe her eyes

A curious breeze
A garlic breath
Which sounded like a snore
Somewhere near the Steinway (or even from within)
Had caused the doily fringe to waft & tremble in the gloom

Evelyn, a dog, having undergone
Further modification
Pondered the significance of short-person behavior
In pedal-depressed panchromatic resonance
And other highly ambient domains...

One of my faves with regard to Lyrics.Simple and Beautiful.

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me and love another,
You'll regret it all some day:

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between.
But not you've left me and love another;
You have shattered all of my dreams:

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me
When I awake my poor heart pains.
So when you come back and make me happy
I'll forgive you dear, I'll take all the blame.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

Hi,

I am relatively new to Audio Circle. I have been following the Bryston Circle for a few weeks and I have enjoyed the dialog. Great thread Laundrew! I thought I would introduce myself by posting one of my favorite lyrics:

The Dream
Graeme Edge (from The Moody Blues "On the Threshold of a Dream" album)

When the white eagle of the North
Is flying overhead
And the browns, reds and golds of autumn
Lie in the gutter, dead

Remember then, the summer birds
With wings of fire flaying
Come to witness springs new hope
Born of leaves decaying

Just as new life will come from death
Love will come at leisure
Love of love, love of life
And giving without measure

Gives in return a wondrous yearn
Of a promise almost seen
Live hand-in-hand
And together we'll stand

On the threshold of a dream...

Witch Hunt (Rush, Neil Peart)

The night is black
Without a moon.
The air is thick and still.
The vigilantes gather on
The lonely torchlit hill.

Features distorted in the flickering light,
The faces are twisted and grotesque.
Silent and stern in the sweltering night,
The mob moves like demons possesed.
Quiet in conscience, calm in their right,
Confident their ways are best.

The righteous rise
With burning eyes
Of hatred and ill-will.
Madmen fed on fear and lies
To beat and burn and kill.

They say there are strangers who threaten us,
are immigrants and infidels.
They say there is strangeness too dangerous
In our theaters and bookstore shelves.
Those who know what's best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves.

Quick to judge,
Quick to anger,
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand...

With Graeme's (who was the drummer) poem, and deep voice and Mike Pinder's incredible Mellotron, this is a great one.  It will also be in my "Cut of the Day" thread I like it so much. :thumb:

I am a "word" person.  My favorite music tells a story either directly or by inference. Joni Mitchell is my all time champion for being able to paint a portrait with just a few words or tell a story in just a few lines.  Here are two of my favorites from her. "Urge" For Going is my all time favorite lyrical masterpiece. Maybe it helps to have grown up in a place where the end of summer brings a little regret and feeling of loss.

Urge For Going
by Joni Mitchell

I awoke today and found
the frost perched on the town
It hovered in a frozen sky
then it gobbled summer down
When the sun turns traitor cold
and all the trees are shivering in a naked row

I get the urge for going
But I never seem to go
I get the urge for going
When the meadow grass is turning brown
Summertime is falling down and winter is closing in

I had me a man in summertime
He had summer-colored skin
And not another girl in town
My darling's heart could win
But when the leaves fell on the ground
Bully winds came around
Pushed them face down in the snow

He got the urge for going
And I had to let him go
He got the urge for going
When the meadow grass was turning brown
Summertime was falling down and winter was closing in

Now the warriors of winter
They gave a cold triumphant shout
And all that stays is dying
And all that lives is gettin' out
See the geese in chevron flight
Flapping and racing on before the snow

They got the urge for going
And they got the wings so they can go
They get the urge for going
When the meadow grass is turning brown
Summertime is falling down and winter is closing in

I'll ply the fire with kindling now
I'll pull the blankets up to my chin
I'll lock the vagrant winter out and
I'll fold my wandering in
I'd like to call back summertime
Have her stay for just another month or so

But she's got the urge for going
So I guess she'll have to go
She gets the urge for going
When the meadow grass is turning brown
All her empire's falling down
And winter's closing in.
And I get the urge for going
When the meadow grass is turning brown
And summertime is falling down.

Woodstock:

by Joni Mitchell

I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him where are you going
And this he told me
I'm going on down to Yasgur's farm
I'm going to join in a rock 'n' roll band
I'm going to camp out on the land
I'm going to try an' get my soul free

We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

Then can I walk beside you
I have come here to lose the smog
And I feel to be a cog in something turning
Well maybe it is just the time of year
Or maybe it's the time of man
I don't know who I am
But you know life is for learning

We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation

We are stardust
Billion year old carbon
We are golden
Caught in the devil's bargain
And we've got to get ourselves
back to the garden

+1 on Joni Mitchell.  "Woodstck" to me is not so much about the event itself but about the human condition.  This is a very good song that becomes exceptionally great in the last verse with.....[we are] "Caught in the Devil's bargain and we've got to get ourselves back to the garden".  This is nothing short of the theme of the entire Bible wrapped up in a dozen words or so.  Everything in our existence flows organically from this theme and Joni Mitchell has woven it brilliantly into these lyrics.

The Last Dance ~Whispers in Rage~

51051

Seems that time forgot
To make this one a happy ending
Though some things are never supposed to change
They always do and sometimes fall apart
From perfect ways into a place

    We always want to forget

Living time that never will move forward
We’ll always remain here alone in part without you

    The lost, dancing alone
    The lost dancer alone

You’re the lucky one who never had to say goodbye
Who says the lucky go on living

We dance to remember
And we dance to never forget
Not to ever, to never be alone

    To never dance alone

And in the end we have what we remember
In the end you never dance alone

Be well...

I generally don't pay attention to lyrics...but my favourite lyric of all time is from Dire Straits 'Industrial Disease"......

"Two men say they're Jesus, one of them must be wrong...."  :)

Nothing Is True
By Jim Carroll and Brian Linsley

You get nothin' back for all you've saved
Just eternity in a spacious grave

She said, Nothing is true, everything is permitted

Things just go from bad to worse
Starts like a kiss and ends like a curse
But nothing's true, she said everything is permitted

She got jewels on her tongue to time the stars
She drives all morning in unmarked cars
But nothing's true, it is all permitted

She got these special tools just to keep things tight
They robbed her eyes long ago of light
But nothing's true, she told me it's all permitted

She got inscrutable poise and nihilist charms
She gets her sleep through tubes in her arm
She said nothing is true, she said everything is permitted

She nods on graves, the marble's cold and white,
Her dreams surround the sun like a satellite
She said nothin' is true, she told me it's all permitted

The spiders [milk?] her thigh, it does not phase her
She cleans her skin with a krypton laser
Nothing is true, everything is permitted

She got heels so high, she got a gown so thin
Her eyes stop the whip before it tames her sin
She says nothin' is true, everything is permitted

Until they perfect the techniques to clone
You all better remember you're all alone
Because nothing is true, she said everything is permitted

THE HOCKEY SONG (Smith, James, Good and Phillips) ©1992

So there I was, over in Paris
Eating wine and drinking cheese
And this guy comes up to me and he says
" Where are you from?"
Well, I says "Yeah, I'm from Canada"
And he says "Zoot Allure, mon Dieu, you are from Canada? Do you play hockey?"
And I says "Do I play hockey?

Chorus
Well, I play Air hockey, Ball hockey, Barn Hockey, Bubble Hockey, Field hockey,
Floor hockey, Ice hockey, Kitchen hockey, Road hockey,Roller hockey, Table hockey, Twist hockey
And I play hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey,
hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey all the time!
Take shots!

So there I was way out in California
And this guy comes up to me and he says
" Where are you from dude?"
Well, I says "Yeah, I'm from Canada"
And he says "Wow! Where are you from dude?"
And I says "Look I'm from Canada"
And he says "Wow. If you're from Canada? Do you like, play hockey?"
And I says "Do I play hockey?

Chorus

So there I was way down under in Australia
And this guy comes up to me and he says
" Where are you from?"
Well, I says "Yeah, I'm from Canada"
And he says "Do right, honey child. If you're from Canada? Do you play hockey?"
And I says "Do I play hockey?

Chorus

He shoots. He scores!
