MFW-15 Info.
« on: 24 Aug 2010, 10:19 pm »
With all the MFW-15 stuff filling the market,  some of this stuff is tempting to use as DIY.  Although everyone with any knowledge seems to be really tight lipped about what they know.

I'm really new here but wanted to post here as a place to compile available info about the MFW-15 specs.  With GR bringing the drivers in as a blowout a couple pieces of info would be helpful for those not just replacing broken equipment.
  • I think one of the mods here said he would post the T/S parameters when he gets a chance to measure them. :thumb:
  • I'm pretty sure the tuning of the box is ~19Hz
  • Anyone know the volume of the cabinet?

I don't know anything about the cabinet design. You can ask Mark Seton about it if you know how to locate him.

From what I saw of them, they were a pretty large sized box to just have one cross brace running through them.

I might have to come up with a good alternative.

Also seems to be that no one can recommend a replacement amp (since the originals were so bad), not sure why that is so difficult?

The box, amp and driver were all custom spec'd by Seaton which is why finding a replacement amp isn't easy. Kevin (sandbagger) has an upgrade for them either out or in the works and is working at doing a stock replacement for the amp as well. Its all on Seaton's forum.

Yes I have a upgrade(TURBO) that will double the output and with a serious increase in Sound Quality.
Mark and I am currently working with some OEM amp manufactures to come up with something that will fit in the box to be used as a replacemnt amp.  The problem is that  the cutout in the box is very NON STANDARD!! so nothing in the market today will fit.  and the info can be found over at seatons in my sub forum

how does the MFW-15 compare to the SW-12B?  What's a better match for a 2150 cu ft room (see floor plans here) - one MFW-15 or a pair of SW-12B in parallel?  What will match better with N3/N3S fronts?

I think either of them can be made to sound outstanding or horrible. The box construction and primarily how solid and non-resonant it is makes a huge difference in how it sounds.

When it comes to sound quality another important aspect is how fast it can stop. And everything that you do to make it play really low fights against that aspect. To play low you need a bigger diaphragm, heavier moving mass and low Fs. To stop really fast you want a lighter weight moving mass and you try to limit the exertion to shorter strokes. That gives you less stored energy.

So weight your objectives and go in a direction that will best get you there.

For music only and quality in mind then I might go with four SW-12B's in a sealed box with a SA-1 amp or something with a transform circuit.

For home theater I might go with one (or maybe two of them) MFW-15 in a ported box and a big amp on it.

Seaton's Turbo upgrade includes a Kevlar driver so the lighter weight must be why the sound quality is so much better.
