What to do with extra jewel cases?
« on: 24 Aug 2010, 02:26 am »
I have a friend that has a bunch of empty jewel cases and wants to know what to do with them.  She doesn't think you can recycle them because the plastic is too thick.  Any ideas?

Funny, I am currently rescuing scores of the same from a client who is moving their discs to binders.
I think they can be recycled...but, she can post them on Craig's List (if the quantity justifies the trouble) I am sure there is someone out there who likes the jewel cases like myself.

IF the cases are nearly perfect, donate them to small CD resale shops.
These stores would use nearly new ones to replace junky cases traded in.
If the cases are all scratched up already, they are junk.

Tell her not to get rid of them. She'll be sorry when she changes her mind on the storage method, and she will eventually change her mind.Trust me on this!!!!  :bawl:

How many does she have? If she doesn't want them, and depending on the number, I might pay the UPS to ship them to me.

Donate them to your local library. I had nearly 600 almost new that I dropped off for them and they were extremely happy because they loan CD's out and the cases are fairly abused. Ask for a tax write off receipt.

I don't think the thickness of the plastic makes any difference. The key would be to find out what plastic they're made of and then find someone to take them. That may be easier said than done. :)

Donating them to the library as KKM suggests is a good idea. She might also want to ask all her friends and family members if they have any broken jewel cases they would like replacements for. I think most everyone has at least one or two with a crack, broken hinge, etc.

It's kind of interesting that, when CDs first came out, a lot of people said jewel cases were crap (I thought so too), yet in all the years since I haven't seen a good replacement.

The record companies have come up with some things that are worse, but nothing that's really better.

If they are in good condition, try sending them to Amazon -- every disk I buy from them comes with only a cracked case.....:)

Hi Josh,

I think I heard that NYC was changing the recycling laws so that all plastic (except bags) goes in the same bins.
