Cornet Tube choices and substitutions question?

Can you substitute a 5963 for the 12AU7 in the Cornet?
Do the 12AX7 tubes need to be a matched pair?

Grover:
The 5963 is a direct sup for the 12AU7 and works fine.
Matched 12AX7's aren't necessary, although tubes with matching sides are preferred. Mixing different makes and years of 12AX7's has resulted in noticeable improvements in mine.

I use a RCA 5963 and two RCA 5751's in my Cornet.  All sounds great, although I haven't tried rolling any other tubes yet.

It's nice to have sections within a tube reasonably matched.  It's a matter of channel balance.  For best soundstaging you want left pretty close to right.

The good news is that each tube can be radically different from the others.  You can mix brands of 12AX7 very successfully.  That is one reason why I run both channels through a single tube.  The other, of course, is to prevent unwanted feedback.
