I am selling off one of my Sugden A21a integrated amplifiers. This particular one is a late model A21a 'series one' that has the pre-amp option in silver finish.
Modifications of this A21a have been made to enhance the sonic character of the original. Modifications include:
-Taking the balance function out of the amplifier and bridging to straight stereo. (This is possibly the most needless function on the amp & Sugden themselves have done away it in the new A21a 'series two'.)
-Volume has been replaced with a DACT stepped attenuator - to fit it has been moved over to the balance knob the original stereo knob is now functionless (There is no need to mention the sonic upgrade that a good attenuator will add to a system - what it adds to the Sugden is extra headroom, high end sparkle & detail.)
-The original selector knob has also been replaced with a high quality DACT selector switch.
-3 fuses have been replaced with HI-FI tuning fuses.
-Finally, included is an Absolute Power Cord MKII from GTT Audio (see review in Stereo times).
I had originally planned to have a custom wood faceplate made for this amp (kind of like the Blue Circle amps), which IMO would look killer.
Overall condition is very good - there is a hairline scratch on the selector knob ( which could become a spare if a new faceplate was made). The top panel has some faint smudges and wear - these are barely noticeable and are only mentioned for full disclosure. Original silver faceplate is in very good condition with only a few miniscule nicks.
I am an A21a fanatic and I stand behind what I say that these mods have only added to the original character and sonic signature of the stock version - I have briefly owned an A21SE and what I found lacking in the new amps (to quote HI-FI Choice's review of the A21a 'series two') is the lack of romance that is inherent in the original A21a. What has been added is extra detail and headroom that bring out the highs but has not diminished any of it's original gorgeous traits.
Comes with original manual and shipping braces - box is not original. No phono card. Lots of extra photos available.
