Upsample?

MSB has a new modification to upsample its DACs to 192. Realistically what improvement in sound would one expect to achieve by increasing upsampling from 92 to 192? Thanks.

I don't think it was a dumb question, but moreso that there's no simple answer. There's a lot of controversy out there these days as to whether upsampling/oversampling actually improves performance or simply changes it. In addition, there are many different camps as to how the upsampling/oversampling is done that will give you different answers.

FWIW - I've been in one group situation where a DAC with oversampling capability was switchable was being demoed (apologies for not remembering which DAC it was)...out of 7 people in the room, 4 preferred the oversampled sound, 3 preferred the non-oversampled sound, and 1 heard differences but couldn't decide which he liked better....

So I can spend $699 for an improvement which I may or may not percieve to be an improvement. You sort of confirmed what I suspected. Thanks Phil.

Paul...the only caveat I'd assume in this case is that since it is being sold as an "upgrade", you'd have to think that the people at MSB think it makes an improvement. My original point was that I don't think you can generalize that upsampling/oversampling is always better/worse than non-upsampling/oversampling. But if a company says "pay us $699 for an upgrade", they might feel that the specific implementation of upsampling/oversampling offers a significant performance improvement...
