General sound types by Manufacturer??
« on: 17 Aug 2010, 12:08 am »
In my limited exposure to tubes I wonder while I'm searching for size matches if there is a place/web site/link to an overall sound type by each manufacturer or country of origin. Like Mullards generally sound like XYZ, GE generally sound like 123...is there a thread I'm missing or a place to look for that information?? I understand that differences may be subtle and even exist within the same size and manufacturer...I'm looking for overall qualities.

Ouch! Difficult question.

The best way to find your answer: Talk to some tube rollers (a few of them) that have used multiple tubes in the same circuit. That's the only way you'll get a good answer because Brand X amp or preamp and brand Y can make the exact same tube sound differently.

I have used dozens of tubes and can't give a meaningful answer. I have liked SINO 6SN7's more than anything else in many applications, couldn't stand TungSol's in others and reversed that opinion all based on the equipment they went into. Same goes for power tubes.
