ceramic disk cap replacement
« on: 16 Aug 2010, 06:56 pm »
Are there any capacitor types out there that would be a direct substitution for a ceramic disk 18pF cap? I know that most people use silver micas as a replacement, but are there others? The capacitance value that I need is tiny but this is what I need. Because of the low rating, I'm guessing that there aren't too many options out there.

What is the voltage rating of the part you need?

You can actually make a small value capacitor yourself by tightly twisting together a pair of 22 gauge insulated wires.  One end of the pair is connected instead of the capacitor to the two connections, the other end set is open.  Measure the value with a capacitor meter and try again until you hit the right value.  Your "gimmick" (as it is called), likely will be less than an inch long if you do it right.

Make sure those are not SAHA brand.

We had terrible reliability with this brand in the past.  The tend to go noisy after a few years of operation.  They certainly cost us a lot more money than their price savings in extended warranty work.

At that value and voltage rating, I know of no better capacitor type to use than a dipped silver mica.  Stick to CB brand.
