im looking for a tube preamp with tone control for my system.  it must have 2  outputs and a remote would be over the top, im not holding my breath. 
   i do very much like the controls on some of the sansui solid state s preamps  but love the sound of the 12ax7 on my pas preamp, from which i would like to upgrade.
 any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and i thank you in advance for your valuable expertise!

The only tube preamp I know of with tone controls is Frank Van Alstine's Ultra+ EC unit but it is just over your budget.

Anyone know of any others?  Maybe Blair Lamphear of Niteshade Audio could custom build you one but I think that may possibly be more expensive.

There is a used AVA Ultra EC (not Ultra +) with phono stage and buffered tape output options (but no remote control) listed on Audigon for just under your budget.  It is OBO and has been listed for 12 days.  Frank may be able to add a remote control.

I can't think of any other tube preamps with tone controls and two outputs at this time.  Maybe with a little patience a remote controlled Ultra (+) EC might surface, but there aren't too many of these that hit the used market.
