From Sound to Static
« on: 15 Aug 2010, 09:32 pm »
So my setup just decided to go from working to putting out some horrible static, not even a little music.  How should I go about trouble shooting this?  I watched a movie then I was going to listen to music and I came back upstairs after around 20 minutes and pressed play, and it was bad.  I have made sure all connections are good I am going to try a few other things tonight, including taking the banana plugs off, but they worked fine earlier suggestions?  Could something in the amp have gone bad?  I have the 550EX.

Thanks
Jared

Jared,

It's possible but not probable that both left and right cables (interconnects or speaker cables) would go bad simultaneously.

More likely a problem with a component.  You said you watched a movie then went to listen to music.  So have you tried multiple sources now that you have no sound?  What are the components involved and what are you using for a preamp or processor?

My DVD player occasionally goes from playing music to just static. Bug in the firmware I assume. Very annoying but only happens about 3 times a year.

Pioneer AVR squeezebox duet amp speakers.  I'll have to double check connections just went from ps3 avr speakers and worked fine.  I am going to take the amp apart and see if anything is flying around in there.  Not sure what else to do at this point all the knobs for the fuses and speaker terminals on the amp are nice and tight.  If it isnt one thing its another   :banghead:

Sounds like when you turn off your amp and it still has residual power left in it at all times, if that helps.  I did it with the ps3 and the squeezebox and both sound the same on the ava amp.

Thanks Guys

Hook the speakers up to the speaker outputs of the AVR.  If you have sound, then the sources and AVR are OK, and the power amplifier is likely the problem.

If still no sound, then there is likely a problem with the AVR.  If both your sources (PS3 and Duet) are connected via their digital outputs to digital inputs on the AVR, the next thing to try would be to use the analog output from of one of them into either processor-bypassed direct inputs on the AVR, or switching the AVR to an analog bypass mode.

If that gives you sound, then it sounds like the Digital section of the AVR has gone bad.  Or perhaps there is some kind of factory reset you could perform on the AVR to clear a jumbled processor state (not too likely, but a possibility).

Thanks Frank it looks like I may have to take you up on the offer.  I plugged in the amp and tried one side at a time and it worked at first so I decided to hook up both sides and my problem started, it may be the inputs either way a little later in the week I'll have to call in.

Thanks

I figured it out!  The amp had gotten moved around alot as of late, during rearrangement in the theater, and if the tubes aren't in the socket it doesn't work properly.  I took off the top and saw the tubes bent downward, so I ran up and plugged in fired it up and all was well again.  Needless to say I am very happy, although when I turn it on I notice a pretty big spark, which I believe is normal coming from a junction in there.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Great, I still would call Frank and tell him about the spark...this may or may not be normal for this gear. I had amps in the past that had relays that arced and eventually failed..

Call the man and he should be able to comment on whats happening. try to see where exactly the spark or arc is occurring.....
