In the very early 1970's, I was going down the road to ruin. It was a very dark path. Then one day, I heard a new song on the radio, called Roundabout, by the band called YES. From that point, I think my life changed. As the career of this band progressed, there were many songs, which the lyrics, to me, were so profound, they may have actually changed my course in life. Her are a few of those song's lyrics that struck a very deep nerve:

Yours is no Disgrace
(Yes and David Foster)

Yesterday a morning came, a smile upon your face.
Caesar's palace, morning glory, silly human race,
On a sailing ship to nowhere, leaving any place,
If the summer change to winter, yours is no disgrace.

Battleships confide in me and tell me where you are,
Shining, flying, purple wolfhound, show me where you are,
Lost in summer, morning, winter, travel very far,
Lost in musing circumstances, that's just where you are.

Yesterday a morning came, a smile upon your face.
Caesar's palace, morning glory, silly human race,
On a sailing ship to nowhere, leaving any place,
If the summer change to winter, yours is no,
Yours is no disgrace.
Yours is no disgrace.
Yours is no disgrace.

Death defying, mutilated armies scatter the earth,
Crawling out of dirty holes, their morals, their morals disappear.

Yesterday a morning came, a smile upon your face.
Caesar's palace, morning glory, silly human, silly human race,
On a sailing ship to nowhere, leaving any place,
If the summer change to winter, yours is no,
Yours is no disgrace.
Yours is no disgrace.
Yours is no disgrace.

Each and Every Day

Each and everyday I time the waiting wind
All the stars that shine this evening
Came to greet you now
At last, the way, I'll protect you when you're lonely
By guiding you 'round

Tears won't ever leave you like the autumn leaves
Bearing fruit, that seasons everything
 It's everything to me

Better best to try      it I've found,
It makes the evening bright
It's all been down
We treat us down
And I just saw the man giving peace a kindly hand.

It doesn't even end in a dream
Things are never quite the way they seem
All in all/you're really
So much more
Each and everyday, each and everyday
Each and everyday, each and everyday,
I'll guard you till the end.

That life will never end
Those tears will show the light,
Coming through the night

If there's anything around that tries to get,
To you doesn't mean your love can't make the moment right

There's A Road

There's a road that takes me back
There the light has seen your face
To the place where I belong

There at last where I will wander
By the lake where time stands still.

There's a road I see before me.

Made by the man who tells the tale

There's a road that travels all ways.
There's a road that's here I see
In the midst of all creation
There's a road for you and me.

Beside'

I have seen the compass turning
Round & round my heart The senses are yearning
For a possible change of heart
That is coming to you
Coming to you.
You stand upright, you are different
Why the spinal shock the fusion the evil
Spill it out on the floor of belief
Come and mend this design
Come and mend this design
With every right we do.
I have seen the sun, this sounds crazy
The story about a boy in the rain
He was standing waiting for for the light
As though he did have a reason to know
Did he really know?
His eyes were open they expected someone
In his heart he felt the compass was turned on

I will echo, ho for reasons that change me
Every thought, though it takes so long,
Is master with every plan

It would seem there is no end
To the bad or goodness in man
So my friend it seems the weariest night
Just leads to a heavenly dawn
Should we see so much
 In every time we sigh.

Even this we      could call music
As that would match my body connection
Let me take your hand, I will be beside you beside

He took so much a lot of my mind
I can't help believe all though is sublime
It this fate
I see it again & again
Yes, I am taugh to love above every reason
Every one every season
The compass will turn
And turn again
turn again
And turn again

Just a few, more later....

Peter Gabriels "Don't give up" was played with in ear shot and made me rethink a potentially deadly act. I can no longer listen to that particular song without tearing up. Music has always had a profound effect on my life since I was about 10. Your not alone in that feeling Wayner!!

Sting's 'They Dance Alone' (Cueca Solo) always brings chills.

It's about the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile. You need not be Chilean to 'feel' this one :(

"They Dance Alone" by Sting

Why are there women here dancing on their own?
Why is there this sadness in their eyes?
Why are the soldiers here
Their faces fixed like stone?
I can't see what it is that they dispise
They're dancing with the missing
They're dancing with the dead
They dance with the invisible ones
Their anguish is unsaid
They're dancing with their fathers
They're dancing with their sons
They're dancing with their husbands
They dance alone They dance alone

It's the only form of protest they're allowed
I've seen their silent faces scream so loud
If they were to speak these words they'd go missing too
Another woman on a torture table what else can they do
They're dancing with the missing
They're dancing with the dead
They dance with the invisible ones
Their anguish is unsaid
They're dancing with their fathers
They're dancing with their sons
They're dancing with their husbands
They dance alone They dance alone

One day we'll dance on their graves
One day we'll sing our freedom
One day we'll laugh in our joy
And we'll dance
One day we'll dance on their graves
One day we'll sing our freedom
One day we'll laugh in our joy
And we'll dance

Ellas danzan con los desaparecidos
Ellas danzan con los muertos
Ellas danzan con amores invisibles
Ellas danzan con silenciosa angustia
Danzan con sus pardres
Danzan con sus hijos
Danzan con sus esposos
Ellas danzan solas
Danzan solas

Hey Mr. Pinochet
You've sown a bitter crop
It's foreign money that supports you
One day the money's going to stop
No wages for your torturers
No budget for your guns
Can you think of your own mother
Dancin' with her invisible son
They're dancing with the missing
They're dancing with the dead
They dance with the invisible ones
They're anguish is unsaid
They're dancing with their fathers
They're dancing with their sons
They're dancing with their husbands
They dance alone
They dance alone

This is from Yes's lp Tales from Topopgraphic Oceans:

Dawn of light lying between a silence and sold sources,
Cahsed amid fusions of wonder, in moments hardly seen forgotten
Coloured in pastures of chance dancing leaves cast spells of challenge,
Amused but real in thought, we fled from the sea whole.
Dawn of thought transfered through moments of days undersearching earth
Revealing corridors of time provoking memories, disjointed but with
   purpose,
Craving penetrations offer links with the self instructor's sharp
and tender love as we took to the air, a picture of distance.
Dawn of our power we amuse redescending as fast as misused
Expression, as only to teach love as to reveal passion chasing
Late into corners, and we danced from the ocean.
Dawn of love sent within us colours of awakening among the many
Won't to follow, only tunes of a different age, as the links span
Our endless caresses for the freedom of life everlasting.

 Talk tothe sunlight caller
 Soft summer mover distance mine

Called out a tune but I never saw the face
 Heard but not replaced
I ventured to  talk, but I never lost my place

Cast out a spell rendered for the light of day
 Lost in lights array
I ventured to see, as the sound began to play

What happened to this song we once knew so well
Signed promise for moments caught within the spell
I must have waited all my life for this
 Moment moment

The future poised with the splendour just begun
The light we were as one
And crowded through the curtains of liquid into sun

And for a moment when our world had filled the skies
 Magic turned our eyes
To feast on the treasure set for our strange device

What happened to wonders we once knew so well
Did we forget what happened  surely we can tell
We must have waited all our lives for this
 Moment moment moment

 Star light movements in seasons
 Release forward
 Tallest rainbow
 Sun shower seasons
 Life flower reasons

They move fast, they tell me,
But I just can't believe that I can feel it
 There's someone, to tell you,
amidthe challenge we look around in unison with you

 Getting over overhanging trees
 Let them rape the forest
 Thoughts would send our fusion
 Clearly to be home

Getting over wars we do not mean
Or so it seems so clearly
 Sheltered with our passion
 Clearly to be home

They move fast, they tell me,
But I just can't believe they really mean to
 There's someone, to tell you,
And I just can't believe our song will leave you
 Skyline teacher
 Warland seeker
 Send out poison
 Cast iron leader

And through the rhythm of moving slowly
Sent through the rhythm work out the story
Move over glory to sons of old fighters past.
Young Christians see it from the beginning
Old people feel it that's what they're saying
Move over glory to sons of old fighters past.

The move fast, they tell me,
But I just can't believe they really mean to
 There's someone, to tell you,
A course towards a universal season

Getting over overhanging trees let them
Rape the forest, they might stand and leave them
 Clearly to be home
Getting over wars we do not mean
 We charm the movement suffers
 Call out all our memories
 Clearly to be home

 We've moved fast
 We need love
A part we offer is our only freedom

What happened to this song we once knew so well
Signed promise for moments caught within the spell
We must have waited all our lives for this
 Moment moment

Past present movers moments we'll process the future, but only
To touch him we know, send flowered rainbows
That chased flowers of dark and lights of songs
To you, show all we feel for and know of, cast round,
Youth is the truth accepting that reasons will relive
And breathe hope and chase and love
For you and you and you.

John,

Quote
Sting's 'They Dance Alone' (Cueca Solo) always brings chills.

Very strong and moving song that bring tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. The "Cueca" dance is the popular and native dance in Chile. I had just turned 19 at the time, and it was a clear spring like day on a September 11th that all started! There is not a day that goes by without remembering that period in my life.....

Love Yes. Can even sing some of the words. Don't pretend that I understand them.
