The Expendibles
« on: 14 Aug 2010, 12:44 pm »
As if it was ripped out of the 80s... an ensemble cast of big badasses in a simple, linear movie.  Kill the bad guys is loud, fast and satisfyingly violent ways.  There is plenty of hand to hand, knife, gun and explosive action here.  It doesn't have the cackling, yelling, over-the-top acting like 80's movies but the flavor and some of the cheese is still there.  This is truly and empty-your-brain-and-fill-it-with popcorn manly testosterone movie.  It's too simplistic to analyze, don't even try.  Jason Stathem was the cast stand out in this one. There are some cameos and some cast members don't engage in the action-or are pretty limited.  If you want to see the good guys bring the pain in a by-the-numbers 80's style, this is it.  BTW:  Automatic shotguns with explosive rounds sure can bring it. And there are a few laughs along the way. Worth at least a beer-soaked afternoon rental.

I'm a child of the 80s, and pretty much love any action movie Stallone puts out; huge Rocky and Rambo fan.

This movie was awesome!

I went to the midnight show with a bunch of buddies and loved every minute of it.

They don't make action movies like this anymore, and haven't for a while. The hand to hand combat was awesome, and the last like 35 minutes was non-stop kickassery.

A movie I could watch over and over again.

I'm pretty stoked for this one!  The only has-been they missed were Norris, Seagal and JCVD...too bad they didn't get them too!

Stallone offered Van Damme a part but he wouldn't accept...apparently he also talked with Chuck Norris and Steven Segal.

It's a shame they didn't all accept.  It would've been cool to see them all onscreen together.

I'll be catching this one for sure next week, I've been waitin' all summer. Salt would have made for a nice matinee doubleheader for The Expendibles but I couldn't wait and watched it already. Whata kickass chick Angelina Jolie turned out to be!   I really should have waited a week and saw them both together.

Cheers,

Chuck is like..70 now.  Segal actually has a bit part or two he's flabbing up right now.  JCVD is a flat out a-hole.  JCVD's career has been stagnant for years, he could use a high profile Hollywood part---the very thing he decries not being part of. I guess he's too busy doing nothing and floundering.

I think Van Damme let the movie JCVD go to his head....

It was probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

Why do I want to hear him complain about his life for over 90 minutes, and do absolutely nothing to get out of the situation he finds himself in?

Granted I only watched it once a while ago, but I never have had a desire to revisit it.

Maybe he will do the sequel.

I'd like to see a match up between Jet Li and JCVD; that would kick ass.

Maybe a 3rd (Geriatric) remake of the Karate Kid, called the Karate Geezer.

Chuck Norris can be Mr Miyagi, JCVD the Geezer, and Jet Li the bad Geezer.

... Or a sequel about a martial-arts man servant who plays classic rock and is nearing retirement. It could be titled Geezer Butler. ;p

I really really enjoyed this movie. The acting was surprisingly good and the action scenes were topnotch. If there are any disappointments, it would be that both Schwarzenegger and Willis only had a brief cameo scene,, just a little talk and no action. Mickey Rouke's scenes were also fairly brief & uneventful. But Stallone & Statham together more than made up for this, Stallone's still got it going!   4 out of 5 stars.  :thumb:

Totally agree! It was about twice as good as I thought it would be, going in. Really enjoyed it and I haven't seen that much raw ass-kicking in a long time.  :icon_surprised:

Then you should go see Salt w/ Angelina Jolie.  :thumb:  It was The Expendible's equal and I really really wish I had seen them together in a doubleheader matinee instead of wasting 1.5 hours on Other Guys.

I'll have to disagree w/ you there. I thought it was a magnificent film. Actors are people too. They screw up, have regrets, and want acceptance and redemption just like everyone else. Maybe because Americans (if you're American) are so inundated with celebrity personal info and drama, a film like JCVD would just seem like another part-reality TV - but that film has the best acting he's ever done and has more heart in it's ending scene than in all of Inglorious Basterds. And I'm not even a JCVD fan - except for Hard Target.

Hope to see Expandables this weekend. Gotta support Jet!

Just caught this. Nice but I noticed that the blood seemed a little fake. The effects looked like it came from a B grade movie.
