If i had $1500 to spend on a pair of speakers, i'd go with one the below

- Selah Audio SSR + Bass module
- GR research OB5/OB7
- GR research V2

I have heard all the above three, and owned the first two. They are amazing speakers.

I don't think the OB-7 really qualifies.  The kit is about 1,500, but then you have to build/buy the cabinet.  The drawings for the cabinet are seven pages long.  Even if you build the cabinets yourself, the materials alone for the cabinets are going to put you over the $1,500 price point.  Count your own labor and tools you'll need to buy, and you're way over the $1,500 price point.

For what it's worth, the kit is only $895, and MDF is only $22 a sheet.

It sounds like if you guys are to be keeping with the spirit of the rules for this forum then $1,500 is way over the limits.

Well, I paid $1,700 for my Apogee Duetta Signatures 9 years ago.

Some others I like:

1. Snell type A
2. Mirage M1 and M3's
3. ADS 2030's
4. Klipsch K-horns
5. Altec 19

Lots of others,

Dave

Thief !! Eh great buy Dave the Apogees are still one of the best. I owned Mirage M3si and still miss them at times.  Snells if ya can find them used. No one gives them up .

Yup, OB7 price is well below the target price for this post, and with the cabinets being very simple to build, the total cost should be well below $1500.
I'd say get a flat pack, and put them together.

Also used maggie 1.6 seem to be flooding the market at around $1k price point. They too are very very good, if you have the floor space and amp power.

Omega single drivers (and a SET amp) if you'll be in the nearfield. Imaging and soundstaging rival anything, literally.... they are super fast and detailed and the tonality also hits well beyond their price range. If you listen to heavy rock and orchestras at high volumes in a large room they are a poor choice but with my small room and musical tastes no multi way can come close for the same money.

I used to have Bipolar Mirage and KEFs (the model below the 104s), I agree the M3si would be a good value but it is very power hungry. KEF is poor at high volumes but is overall a nice sounding speaker. You could get a newer Merlin monitor on the used market and probably some other decent use monitors around. I think it's tough to find a good multi way for under $5k new, $10k is more like it.

I heard the Fritz Carbon 7 at the 2010 AKFest and they sounded amazing, really filled the room with solid bass (but they had a huge, expensive amp connected that I'm sure helped).  But I see that these are web special priced a bit north of $1,500.00.

I also heard the $900/pair Nate standmounts and they were very good performers too.

And of course anything Jim Salk builds sounds good.

Another approach might be ACI Emeralds XL's with a ACI Force sub.

I still have a love affair with my 3A Acoustics MM speakers. They were just at the $1500 limit when I bought them but now the latest version has gone up in price significantly.

i have also heard these and theyre hard to beat at the price AND they have sound anchor stands.  and even with a sub, still under your price constraint.

My friend recommended me to buy a pair of Paradigm Titan Monitor v.6
I've heard good things about them.

$1500 bucks and new, eh?  Well, I read an enthusiastic review of some Silverline Minuet towers (over and under 5" mid/bass drivers)- I think they are around a thousand- but, these would depend on it being a smaller room, I would think.  And I sincerely hope Acoustic Zen is alive and well.

+1 Tommy.  I have a different sub, but the same MMG's.  I bought them as a trial to see if I wanted to spend the dough for larger Maggies and have never got round to replacing them.  On an earlier post I recommended the 1.2's or 1.6's as closer to the OP's price point, but why not two pairs of MMG's?  Great HT starter or give a set to your brother in law.

A used pair of Magnepan 1.6's will do the trick.  Nate's audio sounds great too.  A used set of Celestion SL600's goes a long way too, with enough left over to get a decent sub if you would like.

My favorite, Rogers LS3/5a's but they usually go for more that $1500 on the used market.  I paid $330 for a new pair in 1980 (salesman accomadation)

The Gini LS 3/5a clone, with matching woofer/stands are still south of $1500.  These don't have the resolution of the original 3/5a (or the better clones), but offer a non-fatiguing sound that would fill a good sized room.  At the 2008 AKFest they were by far the cheapest speaker there to tame those horrible rooms and still provide good/deep bass.

Very musical speakers. Crystal highs & mid-range. Bass is more than enuff for a mid sized room.

I would steer you towards Tannoy dual concentrics. Something wiht a 10 or 12" Monitor Gold or HPD drivers, Maybe even DMT 10, 12 or 15. I currently have a pair or ardens with HPD385s and really like them.

Zu Druid's with '08 update.

No, I've never heard them but I own the new Soul Superflys and love what the do.

Zu just announced upcoming speakers by the name of The Omen.  They use the same driver as the Druid and the Supertweeter of the Soul, is internally wired with their new Mission speaker cabling and employs full greiew loading.  Pre order price is looking like a $1000 with planned retail at $1500.  Based on my experience with my Soul Superflys I recommend check them out.
