best sounding digital source s/pdif out?
« on: 10 Aug 2010, 01:54 pm »
hi
Some ppl have a non usb DAC they don't want to be separated from.  I have a DEQX preamp with build in DAC. So I and those with their beloved non usb dacs need the "best " s/pdif source (firewire excluded)
Not so long ago it was the modded SB3 or Duet. What could it be nowadays? It is the Touch or is there an alternative?

I use a Duet(s/pdif) with a $10 app on an ipod touch to control it<DAC/Pre<Amp...
I think the latest version- SB Touch is the way to go now, folks seem to like it.

In recent comparisons into an Eastern Electric DAC, The modded Touch with a linear power supply sounded the best to me. Next was the modded DUET and very close was the modded SB3.

The stock Touch was next, Stock DUET and then Stock SB3. All powered with a linear PS.

I have also modded the digital outputs of the Transporter and I would rank that very close to the modded Touch.

You might have a look at asynchronous USB to SPDIF converters.

Seems like I hear a lot of comments about the M2Tech HiFace but I haven't read much about it.  I personally LOVE my Bolder modded Touch with Deluxe power supply.  I run it coaxial into my W4S DAC-1 and am floored.  My shopping for sources is over for quite some time.

Besides the great audio quality with the mods/ps, the Touch is lightening fast and simple to use.

it looks like the M2Tech HiFace and Evo is SQ wise equal to a good modded Touch and maybe slightly better as it is simpler and therefore a  "cleaner" context for the relevant music path. Also it can be modded further (PWS and clock mostly)
But there are also disadvantages. No screen, ( probably > 90% of the setups with a SB to Touch are not transparent enough to hear the diff between scr ON or OFF when the scr is shielded , a mod of Wayne))  no wireless, no remote control to search through yr musical database.
Through Touch like sources i can use my main PC instead of a laptop. The Hiface actually "begs" for a laptop to add a screen to it ( making it MUCH more expensive than a modded Touch if you can use yr main PC.) The advantage of a PC is  I can use Intel M25 SSD ( solid state disk) of 160 Gig. I dunno if there are laptops who can do this as well? SSD via a USB link does not convince me as clean
