Unable to Bias One Tube in an Onix SP3
« on: 9 Aug 2010, 08:33 pm »
I bought this amp open box described as good condition with no tubes from AV123 two weeks ago.  The matched quad of power tubes (Valve ART 350b's) that I ordered arrived today.  I ordered the other signal tubes from a different vendor and inserted them last week when they arrived. I inserted the power tubes into their sockets, connected my speakers and turned on the amp for the first time.  Everything seemed OK.  I waited 5 minutes and then measured the bias for each output tube.  The first three worked perfectly and only had to be slightly adjusted to the recommended bias setting.  The fourth tube is where the problem begins.  It measured 12 volts on my meter and I was only able to lower this slightly by adjusting the pot.  I turned the amp off, let the tubes cool and swapped the position of two power tubes including the one in the questionable socket.  The bias problem did not follow the tube.  This time, however, the bias in the questionable socket measures at 6.855 volts and, once again, I am unable to adjust it any lower.  I am new to tubes and am wondering what to do.  I'm concerned I might have made a bad purchase and have subjected myself to a $350 dollar lesson.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the bias network for that tube is not working correctly.

I would contact  AV123tech support.  They had someone that worked on SP3's for repair.

This could be really simple - a dry joint in the bias circuit or a blown cathode resistor. If it doesn't void warranty, unplug the unit, remove the bottom plate and take a clear picture & then post it so I can look. Or if you are stuck, send it to me & I'll repair it.

I would agree with this 100%.

I also once had a single tube that wouldn't bias and it was a bad tube, although for me the problem followed the tube. (also a VA 350b)  In your case it sounds like the issue raindance suggested.

If AV123 is no longer able to offer technical support on these (they aren't an authorized dealer anymore and I don't know that they have a tech support/repair guy on staff at all now) then by all means snap a pic of the bias circuit for us to look at as raindance suggested.  Also, while the new distributor won't do warranty service on AV123's unauthorized sales, we do have schematics should repair be necessary.  PM me if you need them.

Thanks for all the info.  I emailed AV123 yesterday but haven't received a reply - maybe my message got forwarded to their junk box.  Two people recommended a local tech who frequently repairs audio tube amps (Mac, CJ, Audio Research) so I took it to him today.  He says it will be on the bench and I should have an estimate by Friday.  If it turns out I need a schematic for him, I will email you.  Thanks again for everybody's input.
