Hugh Masekela music
« on: 6 Aug 2010, 06:57 am »
I went to the CA Audio show and inside the Lotus Group Granada room, they dropped the needle on Hugh Masekela's Hope LP Stimela. OMG, it was amazing.

I've never heard his music before so I started looking for more Masekela music.    Any recommendations on which Masekela albums are worth adding to the collection?

Thanks in advance for any replies !

Yes, 'Stimela' (The Coal Train) is his signature piece! Unbelievable music, especially how he mimics the train whistle and chugging! The lyrics are hauntingly touching!

Heh, I did the same thing.   I went to an audio show a long time ago and heard a cut off Hope.   I think it was the Odyssey Audio room.  Anywho, I bought Hope and then Grazin in the grass.  Hope is excellent, but I'm not sure if his other albums are as powerful as Hope.

Everything that Masekela has put out is pretty darn entertaining,IMHO.Also, check out some of SunRa's recordings, different than Masekela but highly entertaining.

I own several of his pieces and they are all good but none push the button like Hope.  There was definitely synergy between the musicians during that live event, not to mention the venue and the recording quality.  If you are enjoying Hope, give a critical listen to Nomali (track #8).  Yes, Stimela is the 'signature' song on the album but Nomali is a very involving instrumental.  The harmony between sax and horns is beautiful.  My favorite on the album.

I don't recall the name of the tune on "Hope" and I'm not much of a fan of singing/lyrics but the cut where Boy sees Girl in the marketplace "floating like a butterfly", and the mentions of the colors of the Congo evoke such images to me that I can't recall that effect from another song!

Thank, Wolfy, for turning me on to this  (and my wife loves this CD as well)
