Super Pas Three pre-amp woes
« on: 4 Aug 2010, 08:59 pm »
The weirdness is isolated to the pre-amp. Normally I use wide soundstage and even balance. Sometimes the left channel weakens, requires narrow soundstage and a click of balance to the weak side.
Could this be a tube problem? I haven't cracked the case, I can screw something up by looking at it.  Thanx.

Send it in for Frank to look at. A small time slot of inconvenience, for a bigger time slot for enjoyment. Think of it as a time investment.

John,

Try wiggling the Tape Monitor switch. That was always the culprit on my Super Pas 3's. The last rebuild that I did, I eliminated the Tape Monitor entirely and added two more inputs using the new selector switch. Been happy with it ever since.

I would try rlee's suggestion.  If that doesn't help I would call Frank.  He could walk you through some steps that might locate the problem with out having to ship the unit back.

If your up to it, you could try switching left and right line tubes (the ones that run parallel to the faceplate on the right side) to see if the problem moves to the other channel.

Dean

The issue is very likely a dirty Tape/Input switch as mentioned above.

Time to crack the cover and hit all the switches, controls and jacks with Caig Labs DeOxit D5 spray cleaner and cycle them all a bunch of times.

Almost always a sure fire quick and inexpensive tune up and fix.

I think I will start with cleaning and work my way up from there.
Thanks, Everyone!
