The Infamous Balance Control
« on: 3 Aug 2010, 12:49 pm »
Certain times of the year sinuses act up and the imaging can be off thrown off center depending which canal is blocked off, so I told myself stop being the purist and use the damn balance control, ah that’s better.
After thinking about it I’m curious how often more use this control even though they feel their system and room have been properly setup.

My pre amp doesn't have a balance control, so I can't...

My current listening position also dictates the I use my Balance Control - mine is slightly left of center.

Be well...

In the main system I really don't need it and if I did and it was close the chair is big enough that I can slide over.  In the basement system, however, the manner is which the room is configured requires my chair to be about 18 inches off center to receive a proper balance and I just moved the chair.

I used to use the balance control quite a bit depending on where I was sitting in the listening room. However, the speakers I have now have a very wide sweet spot and constant directivity, so I can't remember the last time I used the balance control on my preamp.

My Parasound pre-amp has a balance control.  The only time I use the balance control is about 4 times a year to make sure the potentiometer isn't getting dirty/scratchy.  I don't know if it's sealed or not.

My KEF's have a wide soundstage, so the sweet spot is huge, so the left-right balance has never been an issue.

My Parasound has (horrors or horrors) tone controls for bass and treble.    I occasionally  use the bass tone control to boost or cut the bass 1 or 2 clicks.  I don't like tweaking my subwoofer levels.  Most of the time, I run the pre-amp in the mode that bypasses the tone controls.

If I remember correctly, the bass tone control is centered at 150 or 200 hz.  It's lower than the typically low-end Japanese audio tone control.

I went and looked up the tone control spec on my pre-amp

It's +/- 10db at 100 hz and 10Khz.

I typically only go +/- 1 db at 100 hz.

My system does sound better when I'm running with the tone controls bypassed.

For off center recordings I usually just raise one speaker a littler higher than the other.5 inches works wonders.

Ok, cool. However, it's easier to just use the balance control...
