N3 in a 4 ohm configuration
« on: 2 Aug 2010, 01:56 am »
Danny,
I am considering one of the Virtue amps and am doing some long term planning for some music only speakers. I would love to build some V1s but can't see how I can find the cash to make work in the near future. Was curious about the Virtue and the N3. I've always been intrigued by the BG tweeter (was tempted by Dennis Murphy's Plop in the Box or Lou's Cryolites). I have a big room (20 x 25) and want to run the speaker full range w/o a sub.

Was curious about your thoughts about a 4 ohm version of the N3. Maybe one with the 130x XBL drivers? I would anticipate that the XBL woofer and getting the full juice of the Virtue would bring the speaker to a different level. Was curious about your thoughts.

BTW, I build your little AV1s a while back and have always thought the speaker sounded natural and beautifully coherent. Brass sounded like brass should. What a bargain!! I gave them to a buddy who has blown a woofer. I suspect he is running them full range with the loudness on and the bass cranked!! I'll give you a call in the nest few days to order a replacement woofer. Certainly not a warranty issue-
Thanks,
Jeff

I have one 4 ohm speaker (the A/V-2).

The higher impedance loads are less demanding of the amp and typically sound better.

Two M130X woofers in parallel would have an impedance dip in the 2.8 ohm range. That would be way too low.

And the Virtue amps love the N3.
