I have just picked up a Dynaco PAT-5 and Dynaco 120 that look like they have all Van Alstine mods. The information sheets for both list all mods and they all look like VA FET mods but no where on the sheets does it mention Van Alstine. The front faceplates have stickers that look like Van Alstine stickers but have "Jensens Stereo Shop" on the sticker and not Van Alstine. Were the stereo shops allowed to do the mods under their own name? The Pat-5 has a silver faceplate. Both are Super-FET mods. Thanks
WOWSERS! You've (apparently) got an original! I'm new to the boards, too, but I first started paying attention to Frank's mods at Jensen's in (I think) the mid-70s. I've got a PAT-5 from I think late 70s early 80s that I was going to send into him to mod but never did, and a dead Haffler DH-200 poweramp that blew on me that I've carried through at least one move because I couldn't afford to send it to Frank to mod. TOMORROW I'm expecting UPS to deliver my first genuine AVA product, a PAT5/FET-II preamp that I bought from AVA's used stock. It's about 3 or 4 (maybe more) generations behind their current technology, but it'll be light years ahead of anything I've ever listened to, unless everything I've heard and read about Frank's stuff for the last 30+ years is wrong. Like any good businessman, he'll toot his own horn (and he should), but plenty of other folks with no agenda that I can discern sing the praises of his products as well.
