Cornet2 - upgraded capacitors
« on: 30 Jul 2010, 05:44 pm »
I've had my Cornet2 for quite a while, it wasn't used much as it interacted with my SUTs causing hum.  Now that I use London (Decca) cartridges the Cornet2 is doing really well.  It has Mullard ECC83 up from, Siemens in the middle and Mullard CV4003 bring up the rear.  Rectifier is Brimar.

The capacitors retail at around $400....luckily I didn't pay anything like that.  The transformation is rather significant, I need more hours on it yet but it's sounding great!  Resistors are nothing special....yet.

1uF are ClarityCap SA, 0.047uF is VCAP teflon, 1nF is silver mica, 0.1uF and 2.2uF are the latest Jupiter.

I'm not sure whether to keep the blutak damping & supporting the 2.2uF Jupiters, will the heat for at least the centre lot of blutak turn it into goo?

Why are you using the 2.2 uF Jupiters?  They look like they are in position C208 R&L, which calls for 1uF.   What changes in sound will this cause?   :?

The 2.2uF Jupiter is simply what I had available.  This higher value will roll off the bass later than 1uF.  If my TT rumbled it would possibly let me hear this.  See this post from Jim:

The Cornet2 with the new caps is sounding tremendous!

My only thought is to not put the blue tack on the signal leads.  I have no idea what sort of dielectric or leakage it might present to the circuit.  If it is intended for damping, the put it on the side of the cap, not touching any leads (on it or on the circuit board).  Unless, of course, the stuff was designed to be inert...

Thanks Jim, blutak is pretty inert but I doubt it's been tested to over 200V!

How about blutak'ing to Q200 heatsinks?  Is this ok?  I don't think these get too hot.  Are they very "live"?

The heat sinks are live if you don't use the recommended transistor (insulated package).  You are ok.
