Music Server power treatment options?
« on: 27 Jul 2010, 04:07 pm »
What are you doing to the power coming into your (mac) music server computer?

I've seen the AC thread on the upgraded external mac mini power supply and that had me thinking about the fact that, other than a consumer grade surge protector, I have nothing on my G5 music server. My computer system is not a dedicated music server, but when feeding my main audio it is single tasking.  Also note that my G5 is in a room separate from my main audio system.

Any suggestions under $200 for power treatment to my mac music server (soon to be a new iMac i5)?
btw no options for house wiring changes in my rental.

thanks

I am using a Majik Bus, sold by PI Audio Group.  They have a Circle here in the vendor section.

It does a great job of filtering the AC.  The background is quieter, which allows more detail, better bass, soundstage, to come though.  Its a great improvement.  It has 4 outlets so I am able to make 3 additional components sound better.

The Makik Bus is slightly out of your price range, and I don't have any under $200 suggestions.  Hopefully other can provide a viable suggestion for you.

thanks for the response. yeah it looks like the MajikBuss would be the ideal. But at $600 it's quite a bit more than I had planned. I think it's $600 their site is not clear in the filtration category. And a power cord isn't included for the $600!

You might try one of the older Van Evers single component power conditioners.  I think they sell in your budget range.

The only other suggestion I can make other then the PI Audio MajikBuss would be a 8R15W-I (#002-00713)  -  $229.00 from www.zerosurge.com

15 amp capacity. Protects two to three typical computer systems or applications with up to a 15 amp load. Each duplex receptacle is isolated to help prevent interference and cross talk when protecting digital and analog products on the same PQ filter.4"H x 9"W x 4"D
6 lb.

Thanks guys for those leads. I will look into those. Also, a friend mentioned Furman (Compact power conditioners and PST series)

Assuming you will have another outlet available not connected to a conditioner/filter, you may wish to experiment with which components are connected to the conditioner and which have no conditioning.

I connect some 'dirty' components directly to the wall. The filtration on my Audience duplex conditioner filters blocks that noise from entering the Audience unit at all. This works better here than connecting all my components through the  Audience. YMMV.

It's my understanding that the ZeroSurge while offering protection offers no actual power conditioning. But the isolation of the Music Server from the audio system would probaby be a good thing.

I'm using the UberBuss  & Balanced Power Technologies conditioning on my HTPC myself.

Cheers,
Robin

Yep.  And your setup is a bit more then the OP wanted to spend.  Thanks for the input though.   :thumb:

Cool Robin and Bob Wilcox, I AM curious IF anyone is actually treating power and/or protecting their PC as well.

Anyone have experience with the Furman Compact conditioners? http://www.furmansound.com/product.php?div=01&id=AC-215A_PRO
right around $200.

As I stated I am currently using only a consumer computer Surge protector.

thx

Actually I use an Audio Magic Pulse Generator ZX inside my HTPC directly over my CPU and next to the power supply. I use these little "inside the box" EMI fighters inside all my components where they'll fit. Here's a review on this product,,, but it still doesn't fall into the $200 range.  :duh:
