Storage of choice back in the day. Probably because we were all young and moving around.

So you say....now that you're a respectable home owner, why don't you just install some cabinets or shelves?

Well, I don't want to. I want something I can stash out of the way. Plus, I don't have the time to build/install something else right now. I mean the subs still sport their lovely MDF and bondo finish..... :(

Hell, I don't even remember where we got them THEN, let alone now. Seems like they just showed up. I dunno, maybe the record shops had 'em.

We had a chain of record stores out here called "Peaches" and they sold what were claimed to be peach crates for record storage. That was back when we still made containers out of wood. I think we have developed other container materials and different storage and shipping methods since.
Another favorite from back when was the molded plastic milk crate. I still have a few of those but I believe they have also disappeared from use.

LPs in a broad wall shelf can provide pretty good sound diffusion. Maybe that thought will prompt you to build something, Joe. It's not only convenient, it can improve your acoustics too.

The old plastic milk crates were a smidge too small at only 12" high...didn't accomodate upright album jackets so a lot of space was wasted.

This is what you want: http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10005526&N=&Ntt=crates#BVRRWidgetID

It's sold at the 50 or so Container Stores in the US...I was fortunate to have a couple around me when living in Washington DC 1995-2002 and literally have one down the road from me now outside of San Francisco :thumb:

Crates don't ship well (big, with lotsa' air), but they can be shipped according to the site.

I remember those "orange" crates....had a few....then used milk crates....but the solution now(for me) is those storage bin's you can find at Home Depot or Lowes.
Loaded most of my Lp's into them....put the cover on...and stored them away...for later use.

Keeps the dust off of them....

A small Ikea Expedit may do it
Easy to assemble
The four hole small variety will hold a small bunch of albums
And not create a real estate footprint nightmare

I have, and use 2 of these crates. They are actually melon crates, about 12 3/4" wide, perfect for LP storage. They are now collector items as I have seen them in antique stores for about $20. One of the crates is very humorous with a picture of a well endowed gal, with the promotion "boy you got some melons". The other one is a Dante's cantaloupe crate, both are very old now, as I had them when I was a teen.

I have two peach crates in the garage and not being used for Lps, two got thrown away last year. I searched for other means of Lps storage for awhile, had tried milk crates, they were too soft and couldn't be stacked, the plastic bins in general stores didn't really allow you to store the Lps upright, and couldn't stack those either. Custom built shelves are too expensive, too involved, and too permenant.

So I ended up using these, I think I bought these at Ikea during close-out at $6.99 each. I can put 25 to 30 Lps in there, and they are transportable (still very heavy when filled with Lps). They are not very sturdy, but as long as I don't abuse them or accidently push them over, they serve the purposes.

Chris's post about totes sparked a thought, we get our inventory in the pharmacy shipped in a sturdy rigid plastic (looks like styrene) crates w/ a hinged split flap lid. I saw something very similar at the 'Depot the other day for $7, so picked one up. Looks like a good solution for now.
