Question for DAC owners
« on: 26 Jul 2010, 05:44 pm »
Has anyone traded in their previous AVA DAC for the Vision? I've been trying to keep my eye open for used units, but it seems they aren't hitting the street in the volume I thought they would with the release of Vision series. Maybe people are shuffling them into office or bedroom systems....

Also would like to know if anyone has any issues using an AVA DAC with the airport express. I have the Insight series, and I'm awaiting my optical to coaxial converter so I can give this a whirl.

I think you missed a brief flurry of DAC sales when Frank announced the intro of the Vision, since then it's settled a lot. For me it's a matter of the economy. When things are better I'll probably look to step up to the Vision from my Insight, though will keep the Ultra.

You might check the trading post and Frank's used gear section, see if any of the ones that were up for sale are still around.

I always seem to miss the flurry  :D

Thanks, I check Audiogon and Trading Post most everyday, just to see whats out there. I was pretty close to getting a Beresford DAC on the cheap for my computer, but I think I've convinced myself to play the patience game and see what comes rolling around used from the AVA line. I really love my Insight, but I'm open to anything that pops up (although I just missed Og's T8).

For your info, we recently had the opportunity to evaluate our Vision DAC (Wolfson 8742 digital parts) with an ESS Saber newest digital circuit set, using our same regulated power supplies and fantastic analog filter/output circuits to really keep all other things equal.

The Vision DAC simply trounces all over the ESS Saber, with a much better grain free top end and overall musical space and involvement.  Actually the ESS did not even best our older Insight/Philips designs.

We are pretty sure we are building a DAC that is as good as there is at this time.

What luck! An Insight DAC was available in the AVA used products section, and now its all mine...

:)

Thanks Art for the suggestion, I hadn't looked there in a long time.

That is a heck of a deal, nice timing, awesome. :thumb:   I'd have taken it if I saw it.  :eyebrows:  8)

No issues at all here. I've been listening to an Airport Express to AVA T8+ DAC every day for over two years. It works perfectly fine.  :thumb:

Have fun,

A pleasure, glad you were able to find one.  :thumb:

Marty, will give you the 1st heads-up when the time comes, but will probably be a good while so 'iron while the strike is hot' if you find one.   8)

No offense in your own forum Frank but not sure I see the point of your Sabre reference here.  No one even asked about it.

I believe Saber DACs are a known issue with airport express, which I asked about, and I think the other option I was considering had a Saber DAC in it. Although I'm not sure, I appreciate Frank's insight here, given the number of choices available to the DAC buyer.

I have become a HiFace pimp, but this gadget is phenomenal, for those with a computer-based source.  Even better is the HiFace with John Kenny's modifications.  The modifications can be DIY and substitute battery-power for USB power. The  jitter, or whatever it is, disbelievers will believe after comparing a modded unit to an un-modded unit. As Frank has always told us, the power supply is crucial, and the modded HiFace is a good example.  There is a good thread on the Hi-rez circle.

My Vision DAC was always great, better than the Insight DAC that I owned previously, and worth the upgrade, IMO, but the Vision DAC sings like it has never sung before since I have been using the HiFace.  I am getting into analogue territory with the modded unit.

Oneinthepipe,

What type of files are you using with the Hi Face and Vision DAC? Ripped CD's or Hi Rez files at 24/96k or 24/192k?

Ripped CDs except for a few downloaded hi-rez files.

No issues here, either, with AVA Vision DAC and the 802.11n version of the Airport Express.  There are a lot of posts about issues with ESS Sabre DAC and the Airport Express.  No issues with Wolfson (both my old Denon and Frank's DAC) for me.

And that's a good thing? Hmmm...
