Bryston amp - preventive maintenance
« on: 25 Jul 2010, 08:44 am »
Ok, so I have a bryston bp25 and 14b st that is coming nearly 10 years. Will like to ask if there is anything that I can/ should do to prevent degrading of the sound over time ie replacing capacitors for example? Or sending it for general servicing? I would not mind spending some dough on this. Or would the best thing to do is not to do anything? Have to add that so far I do not find any problems w the amp so far. Appreciate your views on this. And James, please feel free to comment as well. Would love to hear your views. Thanks

Hi Janedoe,

The parts in the amplifiers are designed to go for 20 years plus so as long as things are working I would not be concerned.  I tested a 4B the other day that was from 1982 and it was still within spec :thumb:

I find if there are any openings or vents on the chassis, that over time dust accumulates on the internals, and a coating of dust will make components run hotter.  I usually recommend to take it outside, remove the cover, and with a can of compressed air gently* blow any dust away.

*I have seen unregulated high-pressure air from an air compressor actually do damage to wiring.

You could also try when it's off.....Using something to cover the top  to prevent or at least lessen the amount of dust that will get into the amp in the first place.I always do. :thumb:

Great point Steve  :thumb:

Also with compressors, the air may contain a small amouint of oil and this would end up making it a real dust magnet with an oily residue on the components.

Be well…

That's amazing! I was born in 1979 and I've been in for service WAY too many times to count. Good Job James for building an amp that can out perform this human!

My 4B will be 30 next year, so that's encouraging.

'Course, it helps that I just had it re-capped.  :thumb:

With over 100 hours on it since it's return, it's just getting started on it's second life. Wish I'd of heard it more prior to recap, but was too busy accumulating remainder of gear to fixate on the amp pre re-cap. I do believe there's an added element of smoothness to it, an overall improvement to music's PRaT since the re-cap and subsequent break-in.
