I don't have a favorite song, my favorite lyrics come from this progressive rock trio. Soon I will see the album played live in it's entirety!

Rush: Moving Pictures "Witch Hunt"  http://www.elyrics.net/read/r/rush-lyrics/witch-hunt-lyrics.html

Anything from Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Rush, Tool, and, and.....

Damn, there are so many over so many years. First, it is impossible to just pick single songs with prog-rock - it must be albums. The funny part is do I post the tried and true prog-rock standards that I grew up with over the years, but really don't listen to that much anymore ...

. Close to the Edge, Tales From Topographic Oceans - Yes
. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Suppers Ready, etc. - Genesis
. Remember the Future - Nektar
. Pink Floyd, et al
. Karn Evil 9, Tarkus - ELP
. Masque, Unorthodox Behaviour - Brand X
. King Crimson, in it's many forms
. Romantic Warrior - Return to Forever
. Live Sky - Crack the Sky
. Renaissance, et al
. Live - Happy The Man
. Gentle Giant, et al
. UK - UK
. Amarok - Mike Oldfield
. Time and Chance - Caldera
. Ambrosia (st)

Or do I post the newer modern prog that I find amazing and uplifting, and that I listen to a lot these days?

. Porcupine Tree, et al
. Posthumous Silence, Force of Gravity - Sylvan
. Moth Vellum - ST
. Fragments - Parzival's Eye
. Kevin Gilbert, et al
. Mantis - Umphreys McGee
. Transatlantic, et al
. The Flower Kings, et al
. Spocks Beard (the older stuff)
. Wake Pig, The End is Begun - 3

And where do I separate prog from fusion or from Prog-Jazz, like Tribal Tech, John McLaughlin, Chic Corea, Weather Report, etc.?

This is not a simple question.

Way too many to list by individual songs.

Progressive music (its long since outgrown the 'progressive rock' label) is such a deep well of incredible music to chose 'favorite songs'.

Bands that produce music that deserves to be in my favorite category (for many different reasons) are:

Classic era prog:

Yes
ELP
King Crimson
Camel
Gentle Giant
PFM
Banco
Il Balleto di Bronzo'
Arti e Mesteri
Happy the Man
Van der Graph Generator
Magma

Modern prog (post 1990)

Aglagard
Echolyn
Deus ex Machina
After Crying

Avant-garde:

Henry Cow
Thinking Plague
Present
Univers Zero
NeBelNest
5UUs

Progressive metal:

Pain of Salvation
Dream Theater
Prymary
Andromeda
Sun Caged

Technical metal:

Spiral Architect
Aghora
Spastic Ink
Electrocution 250

If I were to think about this 30 minutes longer, there would be dozens more.

You think Anminal Collective is Prog?  Interesting.

Nice with the Umphrey's Satfrat.  I have seen them maybe ten times but I do not have any of ther albums.  The first time was at the original House of Blues in Boston.  Too bad they closed that place down.  I do have a bunch of live shows although most of them are AUDs.

If you want prog discussion and introduction to a whole lot of new and old music then you need to hang out at www.progressiveears.com

Good stuff there for prog-heads, for sure.

Have you ever heard OHMPhrey?

This is a project that combines Chris Poland (guitar), Robertino Pagliari (bass) from Los Angeles fusion band OHM with Jake Cinninger, Joel Cummins & Kris Myers from Umpheys.

Some great fusion on this one.

Yeah, I post there from time to time.

2 other great sites for research and such are:

www.gnosis2000.net and www.gepr.net

These are more like encyclopedias, gnosis2000 is probably the best there is.

This for me is a must have the self titled Caravan My 3 favorite tracks from this LP
1. Policeman
2. Grandma's Lawn
3. Magic Man
Lp and CD  1968

Caravan's - In The Land Of Grey And Pink

Lp and CD
1. Title Track
2. Golf Girl
In the Land of Grey and Pink is an album by progressive rock band Caravan, released in 1971. According to Allmusic, "it is considered by many to be the pinnacle release from Caravan." It has remained in the catalogue ever since its original release in 1971

How would you define them?

To me, Merriweather Post Pavillion sounds a lot more prog rockish than rock or alternative rock or any other variation of rock.

Classic english prog.

The new Hackett release is his best ever IMHO.

Some good remasters of vintage prog here, much of it done by Pascal Byrne, including the hard to find SFF releases.

The Camel remasters of Breathless, Rain Dances and I Can See Your House From Here are good. The PFM Photos of Ghosts is to be avoided though.
