Modifying a DAC
« on: 24 Jul 2010, 05:54 pm »
Ok, so I received my LiteAudio Dac-60 yesterday.  I have read 90% of the threads about it on AC but I have not found any places where someone did what I am planning...

I have changed out the output caps to Sonicaps with platinum bypasses.  I am planning on running a modified M2Tech HiFace from my computer to the DAC.  I would like to get the BNC version to modify as that is supposed to sound better. (I am only planning on adding external power for now).

Here is the question.  How do I replace the stock coax RCA connection with a BNC connector on the DAC and make sure it is a true 75-ohm connection?  Are there any BNC chassis mounts anyone recommends?  Do I need to use special wire within the DAC from the connector to the board?  Which wire is soldered to which corresponding point in place of the already installed RCA coax?  Is there anything else I am overlooking?
Thanks,
Ted

My favorite BNC connectors are made by Neutrik. You can purchase them here: http://www.parts-express.com/wizards/searchResults.cfm?srchExt=CAT&srchCat=110&CFID=29299297&CFTOKEN=66461230
Parts Express always has them in stock and they have some of the best prices and ship their products lightning quick.

The wire inside the DAC (from connector to board) must be a 75 ohm coax type cable. I recommend using the military RG179. It's thin and easy to work with and has Teflon dielectric.

Wiring is identical to the RCA connectors that you have now, just follow that. Center conductor of the coax cable should always be connected to the center conductor of the BNC/RCA plug.

Thanks a lot!

So, do you get the solder type, or a different one?

Thanks!

Yes, solder them. And yes, run the coax.

Cool, thank you sir!  I will put in an order today!
I am trying to decide between these 2 connectors.
1. Recessed BNC
2. Non-recessed BNC
and using this cable.

The Canare BNC connectors are fine. The wire is just cheap RG6 junk. You can also try these for cheap 75 ohm cable:

RG59 Type
Belden 1694A
Belden 1695A
Belden 1505F

Or something better like:

Belden 89259

Or something high end like:

RG179
RG187
RG216

All in all, RG6 will be a pain to work with if you're connecting from BNC connector to the board. RG6 is a thick cable and it's not very flexible. Whereas RG179 is a very high quality cable, is thin and flexible. Will make the job much easier and better.
