Bass quality on 4b SST2 Power Amp
« on: 23 Jul 2010, 06:31 pm »
Just wondered if anyone else has noticed that the bass on the new 4BSST2 model sound a little bit more organic or mellow if that's the right term?  Have been listening to my new amp for a few months now and was comparing it to my old 4B ST model.  Definitely a much more well rounded amplifier and sounds great on all types of music but was wondering if anyone else has heard this?  The amp images like crazy and has plenty of punch too.  just sounds maybe a tad bit more laid back.

The SST2 is a little bit too polite.

Put a Pangea 9 gauge Power cord on it. Audio Advisor $60 two meters. The cord actually improves the bass. It is an immediate thing you can hear straight up.
I would say the 4B-SST2 has plenty of clean bass juice. It may seem more laid back because it is cleaner, more precise. more articulate.
I have played with a number of 'cheap' power options. The Pangea is the best deal.
(Going to a Pangea 14SE cord, I find the bass less, the highs more 'golden', everything clearer. I am putting the 9 back on later today, to rejudge my opinion of the 14SE.) (the 14, 14SE is for preamps etc)

I wonder how it would sound with one of the magic transformers that the more expensive models got.....

Does the SST version still have as much bass slam as the ST version, just improved highs and midrange?

Why use such power cord when the rest of the house power instalation in walls is normal and directly connected to washing mashines and other noisy stuff.
If you are paranoic about power supply the only option is batteries.

There is a 9 on audiogon right now for a $100 bucks.... They look pretty good.  The 4Bsst and sst/2 respond to different power cords so its worth it to try a few and see what happens.

My rm-20 threw a big wrench in my power cord setup as the rm-20 fixed what was wrong with the wall for current recovery.  Some cords were just to responsive with the rm20. I ditched all my cryo cords and went looking for something else. The pangea looks nice and i would have tried that cord.

Young James using Bryston's former cable testing facility, you can see a pair of humongous power cords being tested too:

The facility was dismantled after they realized that all cables are the same.

Yes in fact I did.Everybody is going to have a different take depending upon who you ask.Considering the PC aren't ridiculously priced I think it would be worth checking out.Besides there is one member here who has them,at least I think so and is satisfied that there is a difference. After what I spent on the amps I'm sure this is much more easy to digest price wise.
