Nuforce Icon HDP usb 1.1?
« on: 23 Jul 2010, 02:16 pm »
Hi folks,
The Nuforce Icon HDP DAC is a great product!
However I got a question about the USB support, since it should be running at 2.0 usb.
Checking this with everest ultimate edition, it reported that the speed was running full at 1.1
This was on a gigabte GA-EX58-UD5, but also on asus P5Q-deluxe.
If I plug in a usb-stick, everest repports 2.0

Field   Value
Device Properties
Device Description   USB Composite Device
Device ID   1852-DA96
Device Class   03 / 00 (Human Interface Device)
Device Protocol   00
Manufacturer   Nuforce, Inc.
Product   Nuforce Icon HDP DAC
Supported USB Version   1.10
Current Speed   Full  (USB 1.1)

Why does it show 1.1 on the icon HDP? Is everest wrong or is there something else?

Guess not many people have much interest or an answer about this produkt.
Anyway, I decided to contact Nuforce Support Staff directly with this question.

Here is their there reply

Hello, The USB speed for all our current product is suppose to function at 1.1 usb speed. There are no additional drivers or high performance usb cable needed. Everst did not report the wrong information. Please re-open this ticket if further question presents. Thanks, Logan

Looking at the specification:
Features:
•USB 2.0 Full Speed compliant and 1.1 supported, 8-96kHz/16-24-bit

Still think their answer in not in line with the specs from the icon, but then, compliant is something different then supported.

The issue is with how the USB 2.0 spec is written than with NuForce in this case.  USB 2.0 has two different modes: Full Speed and High Speed.  Full Speed is a 12 Megabit/sec transfer speed, which is the same as USB 1.1 and so could be reported as such by Everest.  USB 2.0 High Speed is 480 megabit/sec.  The 12 megabit/sec spec used to just be called USB 1.1, but the USB licensing group changed it to be USB 2.0 Full Speed and changed standard USB 2.0 to USB 2.0 High Speed, so the blame here goes to the USB licensing group and their horribly confusing terminology.

I did check USB interfaces out a after you posted, and all in all, it's indeed a bit less obvious then thought at first.

USB 2.0 Full Speed is 12 Megabit/sec transfer speed, which is the same as USB 1.1 and so could be reported as such by Everest. Probably you made the right conclusion here, and to me, this answer satisfied my questions about this issue.

Thanks smackrabbit for the info.
