I have witnessed that in real life a few times.  I went into a dyed-in-the-wool snob boutique a couple times.  The only thing you could get in there for under a grand would be some accessories or "tweaks".  Inevitably a customer walks in asking for a killer stereo on a $500 budget.  And then, there is the inevitable stereo conversation with 3 guys.  Guy #1: "I have some von sweikerts and..."  Guy #2:  "I have some Joseph Audio and..."  Guy #3: "Dude!  You should hear my Bose am-5's!!!  They are sooo clear!"

This just happened to me yesterday.  The home warranty rep was giving me a walk through of the new house. I told him I was a audiophile and system set up takes a high priority in my life style.  His response......So do you have Bose speakers?  Needles to say he didn't have a clue.  What made it so fumy was I saw the original posting earlier this week.

There is lots of money to be made peddling cheap audio gear to the masses at 500 bucks a pop. Its all about advertising and marketing. Thats all we are talking about here.

It's unreal how some people are so easily convinced by markerting ploys. They "heard" it's the best, so it has to be.

I read once Bose made 100% profit.  I would love to see a real manufacturing cost of a lifestyle system a wave radio and 901's.  There can't be more than $50 in parts inside any of them.

I would have guessed way more than 100%.

Actually it's not marketing only. Try for yourself, go to Best Buy and check the iPod stereo docks there. Sony, iAudio, Philips, Yamaha, Logitech, JBL. And the Bose. It's head and shoulders above the others - not that it's that good by itself, it's just that the others are even worse. This is the first experience an iPod owner has when starting exploring around.

Hard to tell.  I suppose you have to pay for labor, the factory, taxes, lights and so on.  But on the basis of manufacturing costs vs sales cost, he probably rakes in a multiple of that amount.
