S-H267 RCA jacks in Cornet2 - help?
« on: 22 Jul 2010, 03:56 am »
Ok, resident noob with another question for you guys. I've finished everything on my Cornet2 board except the upgraded parts suggested in the manual (Auricaps where recommended and better inputs). The caps are easy enough when have the money for them, but I already have the jacks, and I'm not sure how to install them. The board looks designed for the 2 in 1 vertical style, so I'm not sure about these. Since they're specifically recommended, I figure someone here has used them. Can you explain (or show) what to put where, etc.?
I really appreciate the helpful and non-judgmental help from you guys so far. Thanks for the novice assistance. It's really helped me get my confidence up.

First, make sure the washers are inserted to float the jack's ground from the chassis.  Check with a meter to make sure that the jack's ground does not short to the chassis.  There are two sets of three contacts on the Cornet board for input and output jacks.  The two on each side go to the jack's center pins.  The center contact is the ground shared by both channels.

OK, cool. So 18 gauge wire, then, for the connection, as short as feasible? I assume the connections (for each set) would be:
Center post of the left channel jack to hole number 1 (or 3; don't have the board in front of me)
Center post of the right channel jack to hole number 3 (or 1; see above)
Both tabs down to hole number 2, twist 'em together, and solder it in? Any difference between that and going red -> white -> ground?

Should I fasten anything else together or do any additional shielding?

I know this is super basic stuff, but I didn't have to do any of it in my Tele, and that's my only other project to date, so thanks for the help.

You got it.  I suggest smaller AWG wires for these connections; you will have trouble getting 18 AWG into the circuit board holes.  I used 22 AWG.

No need.  It's not like you're routing long runs of wires over a bunch of components.
