Great individual songs from our youth . .

One's that give you a rush every time you hear them don't care how old you've gotten. I got one above all others to me.  It's the power and passion in the man's voice that lights up my nervous system every time I hear it:  Smokestack Lightin'- Howlin Wolf (Chess).  And another from that same period for the plain truth of his performance:  Pledging My Love- Johnny Ace (Duke).  I was around eleven years old, maybe ten.  Might still be when I hear these.  Which one's for you?

Wishbone Ash - FUBB
Trapeze - Medusa (entire album)
Yes - Close to the Edge (entire album)
Deep Purple - Machine Head (entire album)
Montrose - Montrose (entire album)
Led Zeppelin - No Quarter, In The Light
Traffic - When the Eagle Flies (entire album)

The reason I listed the entire album is back then you listened to the whole thing...or at least most did. We generally didn't cherry pick tracks (except on mix tapes). You dropped the needle and let her run until the end of the side then flipped it.

There are tons of others I could list but those were the ones that immediately came to mind.

Ah, youth.  How I miss it.   8)  Great idea for a thread.

Radiohead - Creep (don't think you can jam any more teenagey angst into a set of song lyrics)
Pearl Jam - Ten (entire album, my generation didn't have much but Ten is a masterpiece in any generation)
Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska (entire album, my very first music memories are of this hauntingly beautiful set from The Boss)
Bruce Springsteen - I'm On Fire (still get chills every time I hear that first echoey, melancholy verse)
The Manhattan Transfer - Anything (Mom and Dad were big fans and those guys are hella talented)

Led Zeppelin (the first)  Dazed and Confused, You Shook Me ...  How Many More Times
Jimi Hendrix .. Manic Depression, If 6 was Nine, Crosstown Traffic
Janis Joplin ... with Big Brother
Spirit ... Fresh Garbage, Mechanical World, "Clear"
Free ... The Stealer ... not All Right Now

How remarkably different we all may be ... music still moves the soul

Which reminds me of Buffalo Springfield,
the birthplace of Crosby Stills and  Nash

"Mr. Soul" .. from the "Retrospective" album

Great individual songs from our youth . . . . .

Well....from way way back....
"Old MacDonald Had a Farm"...nice beat..I could dance to it.

Then there was....."(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?" by Patti Page.

Then there was..."Love and Marriage" by Frank Sinatra

And I can't forget...."Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" by Burl Ives....a Xmas fav... :xmas:

Moving on.....I recall....

1961...."The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by The Tokens and "Big Bad John" by Jimmy Dean.

1962...."Telstar" by The Tornados and "Big Girls Don't Cry" by The Four Seasons.

1963....Watching the Ed Sullivan show...."Glad All Over" by the Dave Clark Five, and how can one not forget...The Beatles - ""I Want to Hold Your Hand".

It was the start of the British Invasion.....with many more great tunes to come.... :smoke:

Wayyyyyy Back............

Taking swimming lessons at a long-gone public pool, I recall The Battle of New Orleans, The Bird, and Flying Purple People Eater on the juke box.

Shortly thereafter anything by the Ventures, Jan and Dean, Chad and Jeremy, Limeliters, Pozo Seco Singers, Kingston Trio and other folk-craze stuff.

The Byrds (always a favorite), British Invasion, Eric Burdon

Later on grew into classical, some opera, Celtic and British folk (Steeleye Span)

and the list goes on......

A good song at the right moment under the right circumstances....

In the summer of 1970 Julie and I were still on our honeymoon. We went to a movie in Westwood CA then wandered around town. Naturally, we ended up in a record store. They were playing "Sweet Baby James". We had never heard of James Taylor but we bought the record and the song instantly became our song. I can hear the music, picture the album and relive the moment anytime I want to feel young and romantic again. There were lots of great songs before and have been since, many of them better than this one, but none of them conjure up our early happiness like that one. Next year, when we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we'll lift a glass to J.T.

If you haven't already, get the JT "One Man Band" DVD. It's from 2009 so JT is no spring chicken but still in good voice and feeling very nostalgic and personable. You and your wife will love it.
