Open Baffle Woofers (again)
« on: 21 Jul 2010, 12:03 am »
Hey guys: long time audiophile; new to the Circle. Forgive me if this has all been hashed out before. But I have an idea for a project.

I have a pair of Sound Lab M1s, powered by Wolcott tube amps, crossed over at 105 Hz to a pair of Muse 18 subs powered by a pair of Gilmore Raptors. Sounds pretty dang good too.

But I'd like to experiment with a line array of 8" or 10" woofers in an OB configuration. Why?
1. Because I like the OB sound (I have heard the Gilmore OBs and the Linkwitz Orions)
2. I think a bass dipole might complement my ESL dipoles better than a box.
3. With the proper equalizer and raw woofers, I believe I can get more "punchy,"  cleaner, faster bass.

I listen almost exclusively to classical.

I am presently looking at the Dayton and Peerless 10" drivers.

Any guidance you can give me will be most appreciated.

Hi Chuck,

I assume you are here in St Louis? If so, welcome aboard  :thumb:

Well, for open baffle woofers, I would suggest you and Chris Hoff (BPT) get together. Chris does OB like few others. Chris does four 12s per channel. If memory serves he uses a Tact for EQing the bass panels.

Hopefully Chris will chime in and give some advice on some reasonably priced and good sounding woofers that will work in an OB.

Not germain to your question, but just an interesting historical footnote for the "nothing new under the sun" department.  The Hartley Concertmaster used the Hartley-Luth 24" woofer in a cute little 41"x29"x18" box that was, other than bracing, totally open in the back.  Not quite true open baffle, but in the 70's that was quite different than anything else out there.

Someday I'll have to drag out my H-L 24" which is in a too-small bass reflex, open the back, plug the port, and see what that sounds like.
