Remote On-Off using Power Conditioner Unit?
« on: 20 Jul 2010, 02:06 pm »
I live in an area that has brownouts almost daily and current that fluctuates on the low side, and thought that a power conditioner with battery back-up could help address these concerns.

I have been considering one of the power conditioners that has sequenced on/off and remote control of power for various components.

I was wondering if AVA equipment can be plugged into such a unit to add the remote capability and safely power up and shut down the amps and preamp?

I would love to hear from anyone who has AVA gear plugged in to one of these units with the remote feature and how you like it. :green:

Regards,
Ken

All new AVA preamps and DACs have built in turn on and turn off protection.  They have a time delay relay that eliminates turn on transients and the same relay does an instant disconnect at turn off to eliminate turn off transients.  The relay protection is there in units with and without the remote control option as standard equipment.

These protection circuits should work just fine with your power conditioner as well as straight into the AC power line.

Note that AVA equipment is very insensitive to AC line power variations.  At low AC line all that will happen is output power will be less, no big deal.

I use an Adcom ACE 515 with my AVA Ultimate70, Insight+EC, Fet/Valve
DAC and Marantz SA-8260 CD player connected.  It is about 8 years old and did not come with a remote.  It does cycle the switched outlets is sequence.  Preamp, dac, cd player turns on first then 10 seconds later the power amp.  On turn off it is backward.  Power amp first then 30 seconds later is everything else turns off.

It is very convenient, I am not sure about AC noise reduction. My system is very quiet with a black background. It is also a surge protector.  I hope I never use that part, I may never know if I do.

The remote would be a great addition, I would buy it if it's available.

If you want surge protection I suggest www.zerosurge.com

There are no MOV's.

Surgex gets my vote for non-MOV stuff :)

So since the AVA supplied remote only adjusts the volume?,
I could add, say the PS Audio - Premier Power Conditioner
which has a remote control for on /off, and I could then
remotely power up and shut down my AVA equipment. :thumb:

I know that would be an expensive remote control
but I am old, lazy, and spoiled.

And it would be really cool, especially if I could get my
Harmony One to work it all with one button? :eyebrows:

Surgex and zero surge are identical.

I use a 12 V triggered outlet to turn on and off my AVA amp.  I don't use the triggered outlet for power conditioning, however.

If you don't have remote capability to power your preamp on and off, I used one of these inexpensive IR outlets.
 http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13147

When the IR outlet receives the "On/Off" IR code (it can be anything you choose), it turns the outlet on or off.  You can plug your preamp into it directly.  I plugged a 12V wall wart transformer into it, which when on triggers my 12V triggered outlet that my amp is plugged into.  (My amps are on a separate circuit from the other equipment:  I have to thank Frank for that suggestion).

The dealextreme remote does not have a polarized plug, so I can't recommend it, nor would I recommend it. It is important that AVA equipment safety designs are not over-ridden and this device will.  The hot of all AVA electronics is fused. If you use a non-polarized plug, you may turn it upside down and now the neutral will be fused. In fact, it appears that the receptacle is not polarized either, and is also a non-standard, non IEC configuration (at least from what I can tell).

This is an error on the manufacturer's part, and IMHO, does not conform to NEC standards. If you are using it (or a similar device) as Tom is, please check to make sure the hot side (narrow slot on US outlet) is passed on. I also would not recommend this device as a feed thru for AVA power amplifiers, as the inrush current at turn-on will be beyond the rating of the device (120v, 10A). (this is power at turn-on, not operating power).

I agree with everything you said Wayner.  It does, however, work well as an IR switch for my 12 V wall wart trigger.  My amp never even "sees" the circuit that this unit is plugged into.

Sorry Tom, I misread that you were using it as a "trigger only". Then I don't care. It then becomes a "digital signal", either "on" or "off". Perhaps then this is a good application.
