SHARKTOPUS!

I think the 105 degree Tucson heat is finally frying my brain but I found this trailer inspired and funny.

Roger Corman and the SyFy Channel's Sharktopus is a thriller about a Navy-engineered half-shark-half-octopus killing machine.

Ok.. the top 5  prerequisites to watch a syfy movie:
1.  Get really drunk
2.  Have snacks at the ready
3.  Empty your brain of logic or anything more than primitive/involuntary thought processes.
4.  Do not have females around-they just won't understand.
5.  Have extremely, if not subterraneanly low expectations.

Not of This Earth (1957)
Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957)
The Undead (1957)
The Wasp Woman (1959)
A Bucket of Blood (1959)
House of Usher (1960)
The Little Shop of Horrors (1960)
Last Woman on Earth (1960)
Creature from the Haunted Sea (1961)
The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)
Premature Burial (1961)
The Intruder (1962)
Tales of Terror (1962)

The Haunted Palace (1963)
The Raven (1963)
The Terror (1963)
The Masque of the Red Death (1964)
The Tomb of Ligeia (1964)
The Secret Invasion (1964)
The Wild Angels (1966)
Bloody Mama (1970)
Gas-s-s-s (1971)
Von Richthofen and Brown (1971)
Frankenstein Unbound (1990)

I think I saw many of these films on "Shock Theater" that was on TV at 10 pm Saturday nights when growing up in Chicago. For a young kid some of these movies were spooky scary.

It Conquered the World (1956)

The inspiration for Frank Zappa's "Cheepnis".

To quote:

"Cheepnis in the case of a monster movie has nothing to do with the budget of the film, although it helps. But true cheepnis is exemplified by visible nylon strings attached to the jaw of a giant spider. I'll tell you, a good one that I saw one time, I think the name of the film was It conquered the world (YEAH!) And the... Did you ever see that one? The monster looks sort of like an inverted ice-cream corn with teeth around the bottom. It looks like a, like a teepee or a sort of a rounded off pup-tent affair."

We miss you Frank.

Shock theaters showed on our local ABC affiliates and floated around.  Sometimes Saturday afternoon, evening or even Sunday afternoon.  I watched that for as long as I can remember.  Titles like Track of the vampire, island of terror, circus of vampires, planet of blood, invasion of the eye creatures and so on.  When I was 12, this stuff was creepy.  Now at best, a lot of it is a guilty pleasure.

I agree, put any of those words in a movie's title and I just have to see it, the addition of a large creature with teeth is a bonus. Roger Corman gave us great imaginations. What are kids watching these days - Bromances, how are they gonna turn out?

Oddly enough, that could almost double as a cereal box.
