Best way get high quality rips to iMac?
« on: 17 Jul 2010, 12:10 am »
Hey all,
I used to use EAC on my PC to rip CDs but I recently got an iMac and, for the life of me,  I couldn't sort out how to use XLD (couldn't get the files to import properly as a CD to iTunes). Anyway I gave up and have been using the iTunes ripper with error correction enabled. Is this going to compromise my rips and if so... and suggestions?

There are tons of threads you can search for advice on, but you can check out "Rip" at http://sbooth.org/

You can set up "Rip" to rip for AIFF, ALAC or WAV and point it folder named "/Music/iTunes/Automatically Add to iTunes" assuming you want iTunes for playback.  This will do the what exact audio copy does on windows and calculate a checksum when it rips the songs.

You can also check out http://www.benchmarkmedia.com/wiki/index.php/OS_X_Audio_Playback_-_Setup_Guide on how to configure you new mac for the best playback for what you ripped.

Thanx dude, the Benchmark article is interesting. I actually own a Dac1 which I use for my Genelec desktop setup. Most of the stuff in the article is obvious but it did clarify a couple of points (like setting the word length to max which is something I wasn't sure about). Thanx again.

I forgot to ask...
Can I assume that the iTunes ripper is no good?

It works fine, but the error correction is nowhere near as robust as other rippers (XLD gets my recommendation). If you want ultimate peace of mind you need something like that...otherwise iTunes is perfectly fine 98% of the time.

All the CDs I rip are brand new right out of the box (immediately after I buy them) so I would assume error correction isn't much of an issue. I wouldn't mind using XLD but I couldn't get the damn thing to export a ripped CD to iTunes. If I ripped 5 CDs I'd get all the songs imported a one big mixed up batch.

Error correction would also help with READ errors from the drive, rather than disc imperfections. Essentially multiple scans. And iTunes ripping is very good--at over 800 album rips I have no complaints.
