Bought a BlueRay player, HDMI question??
« on: 16 Jul 2010, 08:27 pm »
Well i finally made it to the 21st century and just bought a Samsung BlueRay player. I have an old HDMI cable purchased several yrs ago. I am pretty sure HDMI has advanced a few levels, do i need a newer up to date cable or is it all on the hardware side only and cable doest matter???

Thanks

Your cable should work to watch a movie - for more advanced features, for which you would need the latest preamp/processor, etc. you will want to upgrade to an HDMI 1.4 or higher cable (bandwidth I think). The good news is that you can get a really nice color HDMI cable from somewhere like monoprice.com for about 10 bucks. For longer lengths they cost more of course. I would order one, because it may well perform better even if you don't need the 1.4 spec. While you are at it, order several cables and adapters that you may ever possibly need, because the price is unbelievable compared to shopping in brick and mortar stores! They have quality stuff.

Yes this is a 1.4 cable. This one is very stiff and only 5ft long. One criteria that is exclusive to 1.4 is 4k × 2k Resolution Support according to this article

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Version_comparison

I have purchased these in the past, also 1.4 (multiple colors available which can come in handy with 4 inputs)

If your using a hi-fi system I would recomend using the analog or optical outputs from your blu-ray, for audio, HDMI is probably the worst way to pass a digital audio signal.

You won't get any of the uncompressed, high definition sound if you do this.
