Lodge Kerrigan's "Clean, Shaven", though definately an indie arthouse production, provides one of the starkest portrayals of mental illness I have ever seen.

Glad to see this has been given the Criterion treatment. When I first saw it, it seemed destined for anonymity in the midst of the indie film heyday of the 90's. I remember watching it in college when it came out and being really, really impressed - particular w/ Peter Greene(?) who up until that point was playing just small low-life roles in various films (and stealing scenes like in Laws of Gravity). From what I remember though his own life experience was chaotic enough to make him a perfect fit for Clean, Shaven.
