Iphone 4 or HTC EVO???
« on: 16 Jul 2010, 01:53 pm »
I love Apple products but its latest design the Iphone 4 has some issues, antenna, drop calls, AT&T service sucks, also the plans are overly expensive, my average price per month is $155 give or take.  I went to view the Iphone and to be completely honest its a nice phone however it did not "WOW" me.  Meanwhile I love the features of the Iphone and the ability to sync all of my files, music, video, contacts, calendar etc I have to admit that the services of AT&T and a few minor issues has me looking into another service provider "Sprint" and the HTC Evo, most of my friends have the phone and its quite nice, bigger screen, 4G network, tons of apps (FREE TO) better operating system and faster performance.  Had a chance to compare the Iphone Vs Evo and the internet connection speeds was faster, calls were clearer and the cell phone plans is way cheaper as well and I get to save almost $70 per month and these economic times $70 per month equals to a lot of savings.  Now I'm a loyal fan of Apple products but I'm really into a crossroad here, so that's why I'm posting this "FOR HELP SIGN"

Thanks~

I've never owned an iPhone, went from various Blackberries to the Evo and really like the Evo - except of course there are a couple of things that are not so go.

1) Battery life is not good if you have lots of network aware apps running such as facebook and twitter. The GPS stuff can just suck the battery down. That said, I don't have any problems with the battery life and have never had it go dead.

2) The voice dialing sucks, might as well be non existent. This is true of all 'droids and is supposedly much better with android 2.2, which they keep promising "any time now" (for the Evo, it's GA for Nexus). No bluetooth dialing at present. Something the BB did really well.

Other than that I like mine a lot.

There is another post on this.
Evo= less battery life- Rare to get 4G signal- Less quality in the camera system despite higher megapixel rating- Not a sterling QC record...not as good as the iphone's record- far less apps available- Poor to nonexistent coverage where I'd need an evo

It seems to be a mixed bag of reports depending on local.  I have att (3g coming in Nov 2010   ) no problems with dropped calls or reception.  My nephew has sprint and hates it.  When I price the family plans at verizon they are more expensive than the similar plan from att.
Now, we play poker Monday nights on an island and my friends verizon 3g droid gets better reception than my buddies ipone3gs.  I still plan on the phone4.  Not too sure about this antenna thing tho.  :|

I am waiting to hear the announcement about the Iphone 4 and its signal issue today.  Everything that the Iphone 4 was taunted to be is true as well as that horrible grip of death issue.  Even today, as I was making a telephone call I grabbed it wrongly and the voice/signal began to distort and I had to disconnect.  It has happened to me a couple of times and they HAVE to do something about it.  Hopefully, today's announcement will be about a fix.

The HTC for all that matters is irrelevant unless you live in a highly densely 4G networked area.  What is the point of paying to a potential something and you hardly get to use it?  Furthermore, if my memory does not fail me, the "advantage" of having a 4G network stripped naked of its validity because the "act" of attempting to ride/receive a 4G signal drains the battery, without much usage.

If I had to change carriers, I might do the Verizon/Droid X stuff.  It looks nifty but I am still somewhat of a fanboy for my Iphone.   It is a great device, speedy, incredibly fast, with a great display.

So far, my iphone 4 works perfectly.  I do not live in NYC, LA or SAN Fran where issues are mostly reported.  Sprint and crickets coverage never worked for me.  Look up the HTC quality record...it's been very bad in the past.  I am not just talking about features/coverage I am referring to breaking down.
The extranormal cartoon about the iphone 4 is pretty funny.  So was an episode of "Futurama"  a couple weeks ago about the "eye phone."
Incidentally, like the cartoon I left verizon to get an iphone 4.  Since it's worked great, I have no regrets.  YMMV.

The iPhone is beautiful, but I don't want AT&T's lack of coverage.  Some say it's fine around here but others I've spoken with are disappointed.  Anyway, consider the Droid X or the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S, also.  The Droid X is too big for my taste, otherwise I'd get that.

Don't you get 30 days to try the iPhone during which time you can cancel your contract with AT&T?

If so why not just give it a go? That's what my boss did last year before deciding to stick with his blackberry (this year he is keeping  the iPhone4)

Coverage is the #1 consideration for a phone for me.  True, some areas may not get coverage-true of any phone.  They go into roaming and share signals (that's how cricket and sprint work).  The droid-x is a much better phone than the evo.  There are currently videos of the droid-x vs iphone 4 on youtube.  The iphone 4 edges it out in certain ways, but it's "great phone"  vs "great phone".  I would have gotten the incredible or the x, but it would have cost me full price.  It was cheaper to quit verizon, and get a new iphone 4 through at&t than get a droid on my old contract.

AT&T has 30 day buyers remorse on all phones.  Returned/cancel in that time frame.

I have had HTC Touchpro 2 for a year now in greater Washington, DC area with Sprint.  Great coverage and phone works just fine with long battery life.  It worked fine in Italy too.  I am keeping an eye on EVO for upgrade as it is out of stock for upgrade customers.

Here is my reason for not using sprint:  Coverage looks fine east of the miss, but the west is too sparse.
Verizon and AT&T are better choices for the western us.

I went from my Iphone 3gs to an ANDROID about 10 months ago and haven't looked back.  Currently, I'm running custom 2.2 Froyo rom on a My Touch and it is smooth as glass.  I would love to get the EVO, not too big on Motorola but my sister just got the Droid X and it is sweet.  I'm stuck on a 2 year deal with Tmobile and will probably get the Samsung Vibrant or wait till the end of the year to try Windows 7 mobile or possibly another Android with  more powerful processor :green:

BTW, FROYO is really nice :thumb:

Stick with the incredible or "X"  next...it would be best to avoid the EVO IMO...it's not as good.

I was just about to post that video. Priceless!

Construct,

You really should get an Andriod phone, there is just no comparison to the iPhone OS. I'm using 2.2 (froyo) on my Nexus One and I have never used a better operating system period. Apple is promoting features like multitasking when Andriod has had it for a while, and Andriod multitasking is much better anyways. Apple used to be ahead of the curve with the iPhone, now they are behind it. The only thing the iPhone still has left to tout about is the app store. In regard to that, two things:

1. The Andriod app store has all the main apps you would most likely use.
2. The Andriod app store is on record pace to smoke by the Apple app store in the coming year/years.

Now for hardware, the Driod X seems amazing, if it's too big, get the Incredible. Verizon is the best service provider in the US (and this is coming from a T-mobile customer).

In sum, the software is easily better, and the hardware is just as good. Why anyone would get an iPhone I just don't know.

Too late, I got one, works fine.  200K+  apps, and no issues.  And all the "comparisons"  I have seen favor the iphone over any droid.  But that's just the reviewers opinion and all the youtube videos.  ios4 works fine too.  So far the only "easily better"  I have heard are from apple haters, and nothing unbiased.  CR didn't like the reception issue (one I am not having)  but called the iphone 4 easily the best smartphone otherwise.  Of course, there will be endless debate (much like hifi)  that will never end, due to the subjectivity and bias of both sides.

I'm still under contract w AT&T so I can't bet the Iphone unless I pay $500 so I have to wait till next Feb, AT&T really needs to become more competitive with their pricing and the lack of customer service is horrible.  Now if I leave AT&T, then if I "EVER" decide to come back then I will be subject to their new "date package plan" which limits you to (2gigs) per month which I'm now with the unlimited data plan of $30 per month, $20 for unlimited texting and $70 for the plan plus taxes and fees   Now Sprint is all inclusive, texting, data, picture, video etc for just $70!  hmmmmm  :eyebrows: but the Sprint coverage has me a lil worried since I do travel a lot but in Chicago their coverage seems to be excellent...  Nothing is perfect I guess
