Newbie question about tube preamp
« on: 14 Jul 2010, 02:39 pm »
Can someone name some of the Tube preamps with HT by pass.
What needs to be considered when purchasing a tube preamp? For example, how important are the spec of the preamp, when using source and amps of a different brand?
Thanks

srb

New:

Audio Research LS17, LS26, SP17

Conrad Johnson ET2, CT5

ModWright LS 36.5

PrimaLuna ProLogue Premium Preamplifier

SAS Audio Labs 11A (optional)

VTL TL-2.5, TL-5.5, TL-6.5, TL-7.5

Used:

Anthem Pre 2L

Conrad Johnson PV-14, PV-15, CT-6

ModWright 9.0SE

This is not a complete list.  I'm sure others can add additional tube preamplifiers that have an HT bypass input.

What does a HT bypass actually do?
In my setup i have a pre and power amp for stereo duties and when i want to listen to multichannel i also switch on my surround processor and other power amp for the center and surround speakers.
Does the HT bypass deliver a tube sound to the center and surround channels?? That would intresting, or is "HT bypass" just a modern name for a 2nd pre out?

The HT Bypass inputs would normally be on a stereo preamp, sending through the Front L and R channels only from a surround processor or receiver.

The Front L and R preouts from the surround processor are connected to the HT inputs on the stereo preamp.  This bypasses the volume control on the preamp.  (You could also plug the L and R preouts into a line input on a stereo preamp without an HT bypass input, but the volume control is not bypassed, so the volume control on the preamp would have to be set at a previously determined calibration level and the signal would be going through two volume controls.)

An HT bypass input can be implemented in two different ways, depending on the manufacturer and model:

1. It can completely bypass all preamp circuitry and just be sent straight through to the power amplifier.

2.  It can bypass the preamp's volume control but still be sent through the preamp circuitry with unity gain.  This method would add the tube sound to the Front L and R channels (if the preamp had a discernible tube sound).

Rogue Audio can add HT bypass to their pres.

I've never paid any attention to specs on equipment.  I think impedences in and out would be all you might look at.  But I believe all that is fairly standardized these days.  I say look for great sound with all the features you need.

Keep us posted on your choice.

Well, that's useful, i always have to adjust the volume for the front speakers after i switched everything on to listen to surround sound. But what i ask myself now, would it be possible to connect a pre amp and a surround processor to a 2 channel power amp using an rca splitter?
Providing that only one of the pre amps is switched on at the same time off coursse.
