Cambridge 840 CD/DAC player

Just picked up a Cambridge 840. I must say, this unit has restored my faith in CD listening, which had been a lot less recently. It's easily one of the best sounding CD units I've heard, and it's a bargin by high end standards.

The really cool feature about it is that it also acts as an upscaling DAC. After connecting the SAT TV input, the music coming from the speakers was very plesant indeed. A signifigant improvement over using the DAC's in the KRELL Showcase processor.

I would stronly recommend this unit to anyone who is looking to improve CD playback, and the fact that it's a upscaling DAC is quite a bonus.

Couldn't agree more. I am using mine with the Wadia I-dock. Ripping my CD's to lossless and using the Ipod as a music server thru the 840. It is very enjoyable and easy to use.

Hi,

A friend brought his cambridge audio 840c and compared it with my highly modified pioneer pds 507 (clock and digital output upgrades) and modified perpetual technologies dac.  Whilst the sound was comparable in most areas I could definitely hear deeper bass from my system using the cambridge.

I thought it was definitely an audiophile rated cdp.

Btw your football team is going really well at the moment and is in the top 4.

I often take reviews of audio products with a grain of salt, but this one was so positive that I thought the 840 was worth a spin:

Hi,

I was really upset that the cambridge 840c sounded a little better than my highly modded pioneer pds 507 and perpetual technologies dac.  The sound improvement was in the bass where the 840c went a little lower.

My friend bought his from hong kong and it cost him $1200au which was a smoking deal.

I bought my 840C in December of 2007.  I have really enjoyed it.  At the time I was also considering a Marantz SA11s1 or a used Audio Research CD3MKII from Audiogon.  I opted for the Cambridge hoping that the less expensive deck would satisfy my tastes.  It did.   I have not felt the urge to upgrade.  I think my 840C continues to get better with age.

Happy Listening
