Hi Mark,

Sorry things didn't go well with your vintage Marantz receiver purchase on eBay.  Perhaps the seller will man-up and make things right, he should.

I still have some Marantz gear that I've had a long time.  If you have any interest in a Model 5020 cassette deck, I'll give it to you.  I haven't used it in years, and I'm sure I won't in the future.  If I remember correctly, it drags some during play back.  It could be a problem with a belt or the motor.  Otherwise, it's in good condition, and I'll send you some pics if your interested.

Like Wayne, I also have a 2220B, purchased by me in Dallas, TX in 1975.  It's been my backup receiver for many years and is in very good to excellent condition.  Other than a couple of dial lights that need replacing, it's a great performer that never disappoints.  However, I'm concerned that it doesn't get much use, and I'm not sure why I'm holding on to it.  The front and rear panel are immaculate, and the vinyl woodgrain cover is nearly that good.  I'm feeling pretty generous at the moment, let me know if you have any interest in it.  PM's please.

My best in your vintage adventure!

Here's a nutty idea. (I'm full of those) If you just love the look of an old Marantz receiver.....and believe me I get it, I think they're very cool.....I wonder if you could get a custom amp builder like Bill @ Niteshade to gut one, except maybe for the tuner portion and install a completely new integrated amp inside! Most of all the old buttons would no longer do anything in this arrangement, only the volume and source selector and power switch would be functional.

There were some historic building downtown, where they basically did this. They kept the old fascade only and put up a completely new building behind it.

Hi drphoto, that is a great idea. A lot of how we perceive sound is affected by the aesthetics of our amps etc. Recently I added 2 "dummy" valves to my 3 watt SE SS Class A mosfet amp. Underneath the valves (beneath the surface), I fixed some 40 watt lightbulbs to falsely illuminate the valve (KT120's). It was made to look as if it was a valve amp. All my guests who ever came over for a listen commented on how "Warm and rich" the sound was. More comments like "non tizzy highs....your KT120 tubes really impart passion to the music...etc etc. IT would break their hearts if I ever told them the truth =(

About 18 months ago I picked up a Marantz 2252B receiver, Phillips speakers (very heavy) and a Phillips turntable for $100. The Marantz 2252B came in its original box with paperwork and is absolutely mint, has metal cabinet, not wood. Anyway seller told me it works, got it home, 1 channel was dead... bummer.

I downloaded the schematic and found a bad driver transistor, replaced it, adjusted the bias offset and it now plays superb! To bad I haven't used it as I use my Dynaco ST-70.
