CD repair kit..it actually works!!
« on: 8 Jul 2010, 01:34 am »
I get points when I use my debit card and had enough for an entry level "gift"..so I ordered "The Disc Repair System"....and it showed up the other day. You spray on some stuff and put the disc in this little machine with circular felt type pads, close it up and hand crank it around a few times and wholla clean disc. So I dug up my most profoundly damaged CD, the kind that can't play without skipping a lot... and the little machine worked!! I'm shocked it actually made the CD playable again...worth all the points to get this one disc back in the rotation.
Just thought I'd let you guys know, it can't be real expensive and it actually works..FWIW :thumb: :thumb:

I use this one,it works reasonably well.Cleans real good and fills in slight scratches.Don't expect it to fix a badly damaged disc though.

I have no clue who made this....I chucked the box but its like the one decal showed but manual drive instead of automatic.
I should clarify..the disc it saved didn't have any gouges just some pretty decent scratches...and if this thing is more then like $15 retail I'd be surprised.... :thumb:

I thought premise of cleaning or removing scratches from optical discs was to to move your cloth or pad radially outward from the center and NOT in a circular motion.  Apparently it doesn't really matter?

I guess not...these two felt like rings spin as the whole thing rotates. The pads are more like a chamois feel than felt. When I say its cheap I mean its cheap..one drop from any height and its toast...LOL.

CD manufacturers still recommend that you not use any kind of cleaner also.I've done both for years and it hasn't damaged a single cd.Kinda like the old myth, wait an hour after eating before you go swimming.

"the old myth, wait an hour after eating before you go swimming."

NOT a myth.  if you eat, the blood supply goes to the stomach/digestive system and when the muscles you need for swimming are exerted, they dont have the required available blood supply and therefore CRAMP due to lack of oxygen.

misunderstanding is the reason many facts are considered to be myths.

I guess the spinny buffer wheels save some elbow grease, but you can accomplish the same thing with some appropriate cleaning fluid (Windex?) and a soft linen towel, or non-scratch lens cleaning cloths from an optician shop. Bad scratches and dings can sometimes be ground out with toothpaste and a Q-tip, followed by some fine abrasive plastic polish, followed by Armor-All. Just lightly scratched discs that skip can be made playable again just with Armor-All and a good buffing. (It does not harm the polycarbonate -- I have some CDs I treated with Armor-All 20 years ago, and they still play fine).
