Sure, Brian, yours isn't trimmed particularly well.  You did say a factory second was okay though!  Don't bitch- it was worth every penny you paid for it!

Seriously, I did trim most of 'em up pretty well- it was a learning process, and of course the last batches came out the best.

You better have meant Bill & Ted in a good way! :nono:

The cases are "1/2 Height DVD Cases" from CDDimensions.com; the jury's still out on them.  I love the fact that they're almost indestructible, unlike regular jewel cases (seems like 1 outta 4 CDs I get @ BB have broken cases...).  They're the same size as a CD case except they're a hair thicker.  That gives you more spine for text or art.  There's also ample room for a good sized book.

The downside is that the front insert is about 11 & 1/3"- too big for standard paper.  I created a custom template in SureThing designed for 8.5" x 14" Legal Paper.  That works great, but there ain't a lot of good photo quality paper to be found, or at least I haven't found much (I've Googled til I was blue in the face- if anyone knows a good source I'd love to hear about it).  I ended up using 11" x 17" Kodak photo paper.  Very nice stuff, and it should be for $2 per sheet!  :o   That was the main expense.  Still, I really like those cases.

Might give this a shot http://www.photopaper.com/glsy.htm

At least it's only $0.30 a sheet for 11" x 17"...

Yeah, might be worth a shot.  I have ordered paper that *claimed* to be photo quality before, only to find it sorely lacking.  But this looks like good glossy stock.  I'd still have to trim each sheet by hand, but at least I'd save a few bucks.  Thanks for the link.

If you wanna go hog wild try an Alvin Rotatrim and you'll be spoiled for life.  Although I must admit I was pushing the limits of thickness on my booklet.  The hardest part is finding paper that's thin yet opaque enough to fit inbetween the little plastic tabs.

My vote for best cover stock is Mitsubishi Artist dual-sided semi-gloss.  Great contrast and it holds super sharp text too.  It's still too thick for the entire booklet though.  On mine I used some sort of plain inkjet paper I got at Office Max for the interior sheets as it was much thinner.  It would probably wrinkle quite a bit with a lot of ink though.

Where did you get the Rototrim dealie? I assume it's a paper trimmer (I'm pretty sharp, huh?).  I think a guillotine-type trimmer would work pretty well for booklets, too.

I did buy a booklet stapler- it was $35, but I've wanted one for a long time.  I'm doubting it's gonna get used daily or anything, but I actually do burn a lot of CDs for my own use.  And it'll come in handy for the 'Metallicus Vol II (assuming anyone can bear some more! ).

I remember seeing a roto trimmer at Costco in the office supply section, might be worth a look!

By the way Rob, the disk is great! Both visually and content wise  :D

I've been contemplating putting together a sampler disk of my own. I have some music that is not very well known, but I think (hope) some of you would enjoy. I'm not artistically inclined, so it would be pretty plain Jane, but it's the music that counts

I with you mca.
I, too, I'm thinking of putting together a sample with my faves.
However, compared to Rob's and Nathan's it will look like CRAP!
You don't mind that, do you?
As long as the tunes kick that is...

For Rotatrimmers try:

http://www.artsuppliesonline.com/catalog.cfm?cata_id=6169

or

http://www.dickblick.com/zz571/13/products.asp?param=0&ig_id=2643

You can see by the prices why I said IF you wanna go hog wild...but these things are built like a brick shithouse.  You can slice off tiny slivers of material, something you could never do with a blade-style design.

Although this sucker looks mighty interesting too I must say, 16 sheets - not too shabby:

Ahh, now that's the spirit!  :thumb: :P  You can always cut up old magazines and do it ransom note-style!  Maybe some dried pasta and glitter too?

Spendy, but it would rock if you had lots of stuff to cut/trim.  That'd be a lot easier than a razor knife. :?

How 'bout something like this?

Those will work fine, but you can't get perfectly straight lines as easily because it draws the paper away from the blade towards the end of the cut.  It would be worse if you were cutting a thicker booklet too.  And, if you need to trim off a tiny bit to make it fit in the case you're SOL.  Not trying to naysay here, just speaking from experience. :)
