Ok I checked out the thread on the VPI Classic, man, I LOVE the look of that. Made me wish my Rega P3-24 had that style of base for the well.....'classic' look.

Then I thought....why not? Maybe I could make a wooden base w/ a recess on top and simply drop in the existing deck (minus feet) Again, I'm not talking about removing the arm/motor/platter and mounting to the new base, but in effect making a box for the existing plinth. Or, maybe get a piece of maple of the correct size from Mapleshade and just route out a recess? (instead of building a box)

Now is I added some sort of isolation between the Rega plinth and the box, say w/ some Herbies product, and mass loaded the box w/ good 'ole plasticlay, could I improve the isolation to boot?

Of course, being a newbie, maybe this is silly, as it goes against Rega's apparent design which is to make the think lightweight, but rigid, presumably to dissipate vibration.

You could build one of those sandbox TT isolation units, and raise the edges to bring it up level with the top of the plinth.  Here's a link to a snadbox plan:

It may kill two bidrs with one stone.  The way it'll look is limited by your imagination.

Well, in some of my reading, it seems that you can overdamp and suck the life out of the sound. Rega has been using this basic design for a long time.

Maybe if I just want something cosmetic, I could just make a frame that doesn't actually touch the plinth.

Yup - Rega is of the opinion that lighter is better....as it will not store energy to 'smear' the sound.  It also makes it cheaper (and easier) to build at lower price points...and Roy Gandy keeps things pretty cost conscious, mostly.

High mass has always sounded best to me....but, one cannot argue with the many hundreds of thousands of Rega customers out in the great vinyl beyond

Heck, I suppose if it didn't work, I could just remove, flip it over and have another maple block to put under my DAC or preamp or something.

Of course the last thing I need now is another project. The OB subs are still in raw MDF and bondo!  Plus the pharmacy school exam is looming. Spent most of the day studying algebra....what fun!     (actually it wasn't that painful)

Up to you....if it relaxes you to do a plinth (and more power to ya' if you have those woodworking skills ) then go for it!

Otherwise, bag it and save your time and money for better things...the Rega isn't so homely bone stock (it's kind of vanilla in a clan kinda' way I think)
