« on: 27 Jun 2010, 08:39 pm »
Hi again.....new member here, recently purchased a Cornet and would like to know what power cords perform well with this phono pre.
Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks

Jim,

I tried a couple of power cords on my Cornet as well as a power conditioner and never heard any difference.  The conditioner did make a difference with my amp and CD player.  The difference between power cords was questionable with the amp and CD player.  I opted to use a lightweight power cord with the Cornet as a bulky cable makes positioning the Cornet difficult.

Hope that helps,

Grant

Hi Grant
Thanks for the reply....I have the stock cord and a PS Audio Plus, the difference is very slight if at all.
The Ps Audio is a 2m and just about pulled the Cornet off the shelf.
I've only owned the Cornet for about a week, so just getting a feel for it and was curious if there was a de facto choice among long time Cornet owners.
Having tons 'o fun tube rolling....sound differences are very noticeable with tubes, wondered if PC made any improvements.

I use the original Volex 17604 cord figuring that a little extra RFI shielding is not a bad thing. The two Felix power conditioners work very well with the pre-amp and DAC but does nothing noticeable for the Cornet2.

Wanna blow your minds?

A friend gave me a Furutech Select Series TF-1A fuse.  These are about 35 to 40 dollars.  They are cryogenic rhodium plated ofc caps.  The center conductor is unknown but I suspect these are pure ofc as well.

The sonics are a definite improvement.  Kind of like finding a better tube to run.

Build your own power cords.  Get some belden 6 nines pure mil spec 12-14 gauge wire.  Braid it, shield it and run the connectors your budget and sensibility allows.

Hello tubes
Thanks for the recommendation.....I think I read somewhere this should be a slo-blo fuse?
I will try the fuse upgrade.
Thanks again,
Jim

tubesforever, please let us know the result! If you roll tubes you have rather big changes, which stays recognizable even if you digitize the result (tried by myself). I doubt that you will have such result just changing the fuse, even if the fuse will be solid gold. If I wrong - you can try it yourself, supposing you have decent computer to record the changes. Maybe it is possible to upload small portions of most recognizable differences somewhere to prove you words.
But I'm repeating - the changes (if any) are more from the liking of the good and not cheap things, not from the real impact on sound.

Tubes,

Can you describe the sound difference with the high-end fuse?  I tried a ceramic looking fuse a couple of years ago that was recommended in this Hagerman circle.  It did sound better, but the experiment only cost a couple of dollars as the fuses were a standard commercial product.  But they were fast blow and would sometimes blow at power-up.  So, I've heard a difference with a different type of fuse.  And it was hard to believe that it would make a difference.  I have no idea why since it's on the AC side and a transformer, rectifier, and many caps away from the B+.
