Looking to buy the PE power supply for my SB Touch....some ?'s

There are many open frame linear supplies available. The problem is the open frame. If you are handy enough to build a case to hold it, you should be fine.

The ELPAC you linked to is a switcher. It may be a bit quieter than the stock unit but it will still produce noise. The ELPAC WM220-1 does come up surplus on E-Bay now and then. The Jerome Industries is still available, The PE and MCM power supplies are still available. Lots of options.

bigwbwb,

Cool or should I say really warm!!

So how does it sound to you vs the stock Logitech Supply.

I spent a good amount of time listening to the Jerome supply vs the Original Logitech Supply this weekend.

Its a pain to restart and rescan all my flacs in the external powered SSD drive to make quick on the fly A-B comparisons, I am working on a switch that will allow me to do this in the near future.

Alex,

To be honest, I never had time to A/B the stock PS and the one from PE.  I figured why bother if the differences were most likely fairly subtle.  I figured for give or take $30, why not make the upgrade.  I may do a little comparo once I get the upcoming Ascend Towers which will be more revealing, making the comparison easier:)

I knew when I bought it, I was not expecting much difference, but anything helps especially as you improve other parts of the system little by little.

Brandon,

Cool!  Thats kind of what I thought when I heard that people are modding power supplies and hearing differences, the supplies are very inexpensive at this level, but the 'fancy' mods are costly, to me.

I have the stock, the PE and now the Jerome, and I have been switching back and forth and to be honest I cant really notice that big of a difference. I did report awhile back that the PE Supply I modded was much better, upon later inspection I was not comparing apples to apples...my fault.too many switches in the chain!!!

To compare one supply vs another it takes a long time to repower down and power up, rescan my library on the externally powered SSD Drive to make a real A-B listening comparison.

I am bringing all three supplies into work next week and put them on an Oscilliscope to measure AC ripple and a few other things to see how much 'crap' is getting thru to the Touch...

The Jerome gets HOT as well...

Alex

Parts Express Power supply for sale
Hello folks,

I have decided to sell my Parts express power supply I was using to power my Squeezebox Touch.  I had the unit modded to output the proper 5V.  The PS is only 2 months old and is in perfect condition.  It also comes with the plug accessory kit from PE that allows it to connect properly to the Touch.

I have chosen to go another route.

I am asking $35 for it(including shipping).  Again, it has been modded to output 5v hence the slight increase in cost over buying it new.  My father in law did the mod since he is an electrical engineer.

Please PM me with questions,

Thanks.
Brandon

Absolutely right, Bob.

It is an old school design with a goodly sized transformer and op-amp regulated circuit driving discrete transistors mounted on a large heatsink. Nice BIG smoothing capacitors. The output cap could be a bit larger.

It is definitely quite a step up from the PE supply. I also like that you can use whatever AC cable you want. It does require you to cut off the DC connector and install the proper sized plug to fit the Touch.

I'm a newbie. After cutting of the DC connector, how do I find out which wire carries 5v?

Which power supply are you referring to?

The best way is to measure it. Use your DVM. If you don't have one, buy one. Harbor Freight sells them for under $10.00 and you can find multiple uses for one.

If you mean the Jerome supply, I believe the brown wire is 5 volt positive and the black is ground. Measure to make sure.

I purchased the Jerome supply and replaces the 5 pin connector with a 2.5mm power plug.  It's woking, but I hear humming.  Is this normal?

Most transformers will hum. It all depends on how loud the level is. These are all surplus power supplies. There may be some of them that are aged to the point that the coils in the transformer are vibrating. If the hum is too loud from your listening position, contact the vendor to see if they would be willing to exchange the power supply.

I cannot hear the hum from my listening position.  Interestingly, if I take off the case, humming sound is almost gone.  It sounds like as if the case is amplifying the hum.

Will this work for TOUCH? Seller advertises it for SB3. It is 5V 2A while TOUCH needs 5V 3A. But then again Jerome unit is 2A too.

I'm very interested in it since it has R core transformer.

Forgive me for being an ultra-noob but what type of wire will I need to use/solder in between the DC jack and Jerome unit's brown/black wires? What type of wire and how big gauge would be great to use?

Thanks.

The same vendor also sells a 5V 3A model for the Touch.

I think the main difference in power supplies is that the Touch has a USB port to connect an external USB hard drive, and has the larger capacity power supply to accomodate the drive if it is bus-powered.

If you're not connecting a bus-powered USB drive, a 2A power supply should be sufficient.

I don't usually chime in in these types of forums, however this one is worthy of an insert.  I agree; power supplies are critical to the Touch, both in the digital domain and the analog.  I wouldn't hesitate to make the upgrade again.  I like the way Bolder continues to make a valiant attempt to win in this arena.  I have tired Wayne's products and have been impressed.  However, when it come to longevity and long term musical satisfaction, I find it hard to best Teddy Pardo's power supply.  I started down this road a few years back and subsequently purchased his DAC as well.  I have never been happier with a digital product.  It is indeed noteworthy and potentially enough to satisfy the true audiophile.

Just two cents from an old audiophile...  I wish everyone the ultimate audiophilia!
