Steve,

The worse case with the Touch has been around 500ma or so...I have no other applications that I use this for.

I dont need to run the fan and have for a few days and the supply does get warm for sure. But I had this fan to use with an Onkyo receiver because man folks told me it ran hot...mine never does so I had this neat little very small fan that I decided to use instead of revamping the heatsinking in the PE Supply or putting in a new VR.

All the best
Alex

Note: If you did try to plug in a non powered USB drive the current would probably be 1.5 amps when turned on and settling down to 500 ma or so when idle'ing based on the hard drive data I have from work.

Does anyone have a link to the correct Jerome Industries Power Supply?

This is the only Jerome Industries power supply that has been used with the SqueezeBox units.

It will work with both the Touch, if you don't use a buss powered USB HD, and the SB3/Classic, if you change the DC connector. It will not work with the DUET Receiver.

It probably will "work" with some USB HDs but there have been some reported that do draw more than an amp of current. This may cause the PS to run very warm. In any case, people have reported the Touch to sound better when run off a server, hard wired with Ethernet cable and not running anything plugged into the USB ports.

Thanks Wayne.  That is cheaper than I thought.

Hi, Steidl Guitars

How about the sound of SB Touch with the new PSU, is it noticeable changed from the stock PS?

Hi Vlad,

I have not swapped the original switching supply back in, but I'll try to do that in the near future.

If any of you are considering experimenting with a linear supply for the Touch (or SB3), the Jerome supply that Wayne links to above is a great deal.  I bought one out of curiosity and I was stunned at how nice it was for $10.  I've attached a pic of the guts.

Absolutely right, Bob.

It is an old school design with a goodly sized transformer and op-amp regulated circuit driving discrete transistors mounted on a large heatsink. Nice BIG smoothing capacitors. The output cap could be a bit larger.

It is definitely quite a step up from the PE supply. I also like that you can use whatever AC cable you want. It does require you to cut off the DC connector and install the proper sized plug to fit the Touch.

Wayne, thank you for following up.

I laughed when I saw the size of that transformer.  Goodly is right!

If I remember right, the brown (+) and black (-) wires are needed for 5v, but if you're new at this (like me), be sure to double check before you attach the new connector to make sure that (1) I am remembering right and (2) your unit wasn't assembled with different colored wires.

The current draw from an external USB attached drive seems to be of a concern here..so why not use an externally powered USB device which allows you to plug a USB drive into.

The device does not put a real load on the Touch power supply. Yes its another 110vac cord, but it works. I do this with my very small, and dainty 250gb SSD drive. Again putting a current meter in to the circuit I never see more than 500 ma continuous.

I have the Jerome supply on the way and will compare the stock switcher to the modified PE to the Jerome and report back on 'sonic' quality results to my ear.

Also there so much debate on NOT using a USB drive attached to the touch and running it via CAT 6 Enet cable from a seperate server and it sounding so much better. Check the slimdevices forum. Also they are turning off all kinds of stuff via modding the boot files for the TinyOS etc, not letting the Touch do FLAC conversions, turning off the display etc..

Lots to play with!

My dad my be getting a Touch and I'm curious (already own a Bolder modded elpac myself) which is the better power supply (before and after mods) the Elpac or the Jerome?

Between the BOLDER Modded Elpac WM-220 and the BOLDER Modded Jerome Industries, the BOLDER Modded ELPAC would be the better sounding. It is completely rebuilt only leaving the transformer and regulator alone.

The best buy for the money would be the stock Jerome Industries.

Got the Jerome today and took 10 minutes to open it up, remove the +/- 12 volt wires and checked the 5 vdc output, measured 5.2 vdc with no load.

Wired in a new power plug, the Touch powered up and its been on for 2 hours now. It does get warm but not anywhere like the PE Supply. The heatsink is very big but its in a sealed plastic case... no real ventilation.

Dont have time tonight but will measure vdc under load and look at the ac ripple and compare to the PE Supply have to get an OScope home from our lab.

Dont know how this sounds yet, but will attempt next week to play with the stocker vs these 2 supplies.

All the best

I left the Jerome supply on all night and this am got up (8hrs) and it was VERY HOT to the touch as much as the PE Supply without my fan...this is with the Touch on but not doing anything exceot showing the TIME on the display. An external powered USB drive was attached and the Server was running.

The bottom of the supply was the hottest, you can hold it but its HOT.

The Jerome supply needs some ventilation for sure.. I would not leave it on all the time. The PE supply is better than this with my small noiseless fan I have it sitting on.

I will try to get to some listening tests soon!

Wayne,
I'm not sure if this means that it will work with the Touch as-is, but for use with the SB3 you need to change the DC connector, or if you need to change the DC connector for both the Touch and the SB3.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

The Jerome comes with a DIN Power plug that has +/- 12 volts, a +5 volt and common.

You cut off or unsolder it from the Jerome and solder a plug that fits the Touch and just use the +5volt and common...this plug works with the Touch but mechanically I dont think it works with the SB3t due to a different plug. You could by a power plug for the Touch and for the SB3 , wire both up on seperate cables and install an inline connector to use one or the other if your planning to use this supply for both? I am assumming the SB3 uses 5VDC.

Alex

PS: What a DIN power plug looks like:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN_connector

Wayne1

The Touch, SB3 and SB2 all use the same size DC connector. They all use 5 volts DC input. The only unit that is different is the DUET Receiver. It uses a much smaller connector and 9 volts DC.

The ELPAC WM220-1 and the Jerome Industries PS were originally made for Point of Sale printers in retail outlets. There are quite a few of these around surplus. I do not believe any more are being made new.

As Alex states, the DIN connector needs to be removed and the correct sized DC connector has to be soldered on. I believe it requires a 2.5 mm one.

Alex,

As you know I am running the stock PE PS after modding it to the correct voltage based on your help and leave it on 24/7 with no fan.  The unit gets warm but not HOT I would say.  I was worried at first but have not turned it off since.

Anyone tried the below - or is it not worthwhile or doable:

I've seen surplus new ones on E-Bay without the cover for $30

Wayne - what about this Elpac Model.  Is this something you could mod as well?
