Just by chance I saw three revenge-mystery films this week.
The Hunting Party (1971) with Gene Hackman exacting revenge on the men who kidnapped his wife.
D.O.A. (1950) with Edmond O'Brian as the hero who has been given a slow poison for which there is no cure, and only a day or so to solve and exact revenge on his own murder before he dies.
And
Edge of Darkness where Mel hunts down his daughter's killers. Now Mr. Gibson can do revenge with the best of them but in this film he does more sobbing than shooting. This movie in no better or no worse than the other two movies I saw this week, I'll give it a solid 2.5 out of 5 stars.
